The fog seemed to thicken, although it was penetrated by a dim light such as is given by a horn lantern. Nothing could be seen a yard or two away. If the gig passed clear of the boat, there was an excellent chance of her escaping unobserved. And it was not difficult to avoid the boat, for the men in weighing the anchor made enough noise with the chain to leave no doubt as to their exact position.

The gig slipped by unnoticed, and Mars could ply his paddle a little more vigorously.

The difficulty was to keep a proper course without running out into midstream. If possible he would have remained at a little distance from the right bank; but the only guide was the lapping of the water on the shore. The day was breaking, and the light flooded the mass of vapor although the fog was very thick.
