CHAPTER 21

The van’s side door slid open. Elizabeth poked her head out and waved us forward. I moved, but Katrine held fast with her hand wrapped around mine. I looked back at her. Her face was a mix of shock and fear and panic.

“We have to go” I said. “Gotta trust me, Katrine.”

“Jack, what’s happening?” Tears streamed down her cheeks. “Why were those men killed like that? Why did they keep shooting? Are you a target?” She waited for a response I didn’t give her. “Who are you?”

“Look, I’ll tell you everything, but we have to get in that van now.”

She released my hand and stumbled backward, letting out a howl when she tripped and hit the wall.

“Come on, Jack,” Elizabeth said. “They’ll block the roads soon. Just leave her.”

“One minute,” I yelled over my shoulder. Then I turned back to Katrine. “I don’t think you’re safe here, and it’s not because of me. Something was set in motion. Maybe when your husband left. Possibly even before that. But it’s no mistake or coincidence you got word last night his body had been found, and today, someone is trying to kill us.”

With wide eyes, she glanced around as though the answer could be found in the air in front of her. “Us?”

“Whoever it was, they got away. They’re nowhere near here now. But I’m guessing if they were ballsy enough to pull this attempt mid-day, they’ll be back. Soon.” I extended my hand. “Come on. At least let us get you away from here. We can drop you at your sister-in-law’s or someplace else safe.”

Seconds felt like minutes in a never-ending day. Another round of sirens rose in from the distance. They were shutting down the roads. I didn’t have the area memorized completely, but I knew this alleyway had multiple egress points that would be cut off sooner rather than later. We had to go. I didn’t want to leave Katrine behind. Not after what had happened in the past twelve hours or so. Not with a killer on the loose. They’d fled by this point. No doubt. But to where, I had no clue. Could be down the street for all I knew.

“Katrine.” I took a step back, arm still outstretched. “We gotta move now.”

She nodded vigorously as her face steeled and her gaze settled on me. She reached for my hand, and I pulled her forward, shifted, propelled her into the van. Elizabeth caught her and helped her to the rear row of seats. I climbed in after, started toward the back. Elizabeth put her hand on my shoulder.

“Sit up here,” she said when I craned my head around to look at her. “We need to discuss next steps.”

“I’m sure part of that is getting whatever intel you can out of me.”

She said nothing.

“There isn’t much, lady. But we’ll talk.” I leaned close to her ear. “Let me get her settled, make sure she’s OK. I’ll get her to turn her phone off.”

“Good thinking.” Elizabeth slammed the door shut and settled into the seat diagonally behind the driver.
