Bill Bennett greeted Niamh warmly in the reception area of Southampton police station. He wasn’t what she’d been expecting. Bill was shorter than she’d imagined him to be, with a friendly face, balding head and metal-framed glasses, which gave him more of a favourite school-teacher look. He wore a burgundy V-neck jumper under a grey tweed jacket, a checked shirt collar peeking out of the top, and navy chinos.

‘Niamh, lovely to finally meet you. I just wish it was under different circumstances. I’ve heard lots about you, all very good. I’m sure we can get through this quite quickly.’

‘Thanks, Bill. It's nice to meet you too.’

‘Do come through. They’ve been kind enough to give us an interview room, just through here.’ He motioned towards a door that led further into the station. A stern-looking police officer behind the reception desk nodded at Bill as he buzzed the door to let them through. Bill held the door open for Niamh. She smiled at him as she walked through.

‘Maggie is waiting for us in the room. Have you met Maggie before?’

‘Yes, we met a couple of years ago at a conference.’

‘Excellent, that should make introductions quicker.’

Niamh got the impression that Bill’s emphasis on moving things along was going to spill over into the interview. Again, he held the door to the interview room for her.

Maggie Sanders stood to shake Niamh’s hand as soon as she walked in. She was in her early fifties, with great skin and perfectly straight, white teeth. Her dark inverted bob had a healthy sheen, and her fitted white shirt and navy pencil skirt showcased a figure that she clearly worked hard to maintain. ‘Niamh, lovely to see you again. It’s been … two years?’

‘Hi, Maggie. Yes, it was the women in leadership conference in Birmingham, pretty much two years ago this month, I think.’

‘How are you? This must be quite an ordeal,’ Maggie continued, with a tilt of her head.

‘I’ve had better weeks, I’ve got to be honest.’

‘I can imagine. Luckily I’ve never been through anything quite like this.’

Niamh shot Maggie a knowing look. Maggie smiled and took a seat.

‘Please take a seat, Niamh,’ said Bill, taking charge of the meeting. He poured them a glass of water each and opened a soft-bound notebook in front of him. Niamh hung her jacket on the back of a chair, opposite Maggie and Bill, and sat.

‘So, Niamh, I think the first thing to acknowledge, as Maggie has just said, is that we recognise how difficult this situation must be for you. If you need a break at any time, please just say.’

‘OK.’

‘I’m going to record the interview. It will be transcribed and you’ll get a copy to review for accuracy.’

Niamh nodded, aware of the process.

‘OK, let’s dive straight in.’ Bill introduced himself, then asked Maggie and Niamh to do the same, making it clear that he was the lead investigator.

‘Niamh, could you tell us what happened on the day of the escape? Please, take your time,’ Bill began.

‘Well, it had been quite an intense day or so leading up to it.
