Cory lay on his bed, shaking his head back and forth at the ceiling. How simpleminded he’d been. To think he could make up for his fourth-grade crime by helping rebuild the store. And then to think he could admit the crime and make everything be all right again.

It’s not all right. It’ll never be all right.

He told himself what a jerk he had been and in how many different ways. It was more exhausting than the weeks of construction.

His big plan, his high hopes, his firm resolve. The results were zero. Or nearly zero.

What kept coming back was the detail that had gone through his mind as he stood on the new floor of Kim’s Market and Grocery, looking at Mr. Kim’s face. This moment can’t last for the rest of my life. It will be over sometime. What he knew now was that it wouldn’t be over sometime. It would go into his memory, along with the sight of himself grabbing a few plastic packages of food from the store and running away in panic.

He could pile a whole life full of events on top of that Halloween afternoon, and it would still be there. That was the truth.

But the next truth, the new one, was this: now he knew it couldn’t just get forgotten.

Cory turned off the light He had an early day tomorrow. Although he had no idea how he would face Joey every day, he was determined to keep on working at Mr. Kim’s. Until what? Until the store reopened? Until Joey began humming again? Cory Willhouse closed his eyes.
