Phoenix couldn’t speak. When she confessed to being as selfish as he was, she didn’t expect a marriage proposal. “The prophecy, Zane. My people…”

He kissed along the pulse point of her wrist. “If I have to stay celibate for the world to keep going as is, then so be it. What I can’t live without is you by my side, sweetheart.”

“Oh, Zane.” Her throat burned with unshed tears.

“What is your answer?”

Red rimmed the sapphire of his eyes. He didn’t want to rip off her clothes with desire. Or tear into her neck with anger. The red spoke of a different emotion. The possibility that she would reject him scared her vampire lover.

Phoenix inhaled a quiet breath. Oh, her sexy, kind and brave Zane. There was only one answer since the night he’d saved her from the werewolves.

“Yes, I will marry you.”

He stood. Phoenix jumped into his arms and kissed every inch of his face, including the curve of his mouth.

“You’ve made me a very happy man.”

“I’m happy, too.” That radiant smile on his face… “I care for you,” she said matter of fact.

Phoenix couldn’t say the three important words. She might have given Zane a piece of her heart, but she wasn’t ready to give him her world.

He must’ve understood her hesitation and felt the same. He whispered the words back as he nudged her mouth open and nicked her bottom lip with his fangs. Phoenix sucked on his tongue. He tasted of cool metal and a sweetness that was him. She explored his mouth, liking the taste of her blood mixed with his flavor.

“Phoenix.” He groaned in her mouth.

She clung to him and deepened the lip-lock. His fingers trenched in her hair, and his erection pressed against her belly. She stood on her toes and rubbed herself over the thick bulge in his pants. Wetness slicked her panties.

“No more.” He broke off the kiss, his breathing ragged in the silence of the cave. “We must hurry and find the answers. That’s your reason for traveling through this god-forsaken forest, right?”

“Yes.” She straightened his collar. “I believe my grandparents have the answers.”

“How can they interpret a document kept in an impenetrable vault?”

“The vault isn’t impenetrable, and I have the scroll.”

“You stole from Arthurian wizards?!”

“Yes,” she squeaked, ready for a lecture that went something like, “No one steals from Arthurian wizards. They can kill you in your sleep.”

He laughed.

Phoenix stared at him with her mouth open. Didn’t Zane realize the mess she was in? The Lancaster name and being the prophesied Alpha wouldn’t save her from the Arthurian wizards’ wrath.

He grabbed her by the shoulders and tugged. Phoenix’s nose rubbed against his collar. “You’re a woman after my heart, Slayer, and I’m blessed you agreed to be mine.”

She flattened her palms on her future husband’s chest and met his gaze. His eyes gleamed. “Care to share why having Arthurian wizards as our enemy is funny?”

“Not funny but ironic.” He circled her wrists with his fingers and wrapped her arms around his waist.
