Zuzana stood at the door to the bunker and looked out into the dwindling night. Her wide eyes searched the landscape, glinting in the light of the oncoming sunrise. “You really think we need to leave now?” she asked Harper.

Harper’s weariness extended deep within every fiber of her body. She glanced at the other faces in the bunker and her eyes came to rest on Tomas. She remembered Erik refusing to leave the van where they found them both, remembered finding the small boy curled under a blanket in the back. His entire family died around him that evening.

Tomas looked back at her now and gave her a tentative smile. “We can’t risk it,” said Harper. She dropped her voice. “If anything were to happen to the boy, I couldn’t live with myself.”

Zuzanna nodded gravely and Harper took a deep breath, willing energy into her aching legs. “We need somewhere dark. The rest of us should be fine—although my father believes there is a chance the nanobots could evolve and change—but Amália can’t be out in the sunlight. I’m not risking her life.”

Zuzana looked outside again. “We do not have long. I think I know a place where we can take shelter, but it will not be pleasant.”

“Is it close?” asked Harper.

“Yes, very close.”

“Well, I say let’s go. It’s all relative, anyway. Death at the hands of the Brotherhood isn’t pleasant either.” Harper turned to the others. “Guys, grab whatever you can. We leave in two minutes.”

“I need to get something specific,” said Zuzana. “It is heavy. But we will need it. Joe and Sara, follow me—quickly!”

Harper picked up a blue backpack and hurried to their small food store. She put in bottled water and the tin of cookies, as well as the browning fruit they’d collected. She spotted her father’s satellite phone and, swallowing her despair, dropped it into her bag.

Then she moved to the bedroom and took the pistol out from under the bed. She turned it over in her hands and examined it. It was a Beretta, and she opened the magazine, counting five remaining shots. She checked the rear-locking safety and slid the pistol carefully into the inside pocket of the bag, then hoisted it onto her back.

Amália and Tomas were in the front room by the entrance. Harper could hear Erik’s tail thumping the ground rhythmically beside the boy as he watched the humans racing around the bunker. After finding two small bags Harper filled them with an assortment of tools and torches to carry. She deliberated on the weight for barely a moment before handing the lighter one to Tomas. He took it gratefully.

A moment later, Zuzana, Joe and Sara emerged carrying something between them. It was several feet long and bulky, packed in a large canvas bag with handles. “What’s that?” asked Harper.

“A boat,” replied Zuzana, not offering any further explanation. “Come on Harper, please do not just stand there. We need to move fast!”

They exited the bunker and Harper closed the door behind them.
