CHAPTER THIRTY
The moment Eric exits the house again, carrying a bag he didn’t have before, is the moment I agree to Liz’s suggestion to follow Fara. Which means I need to get a move on.
“Jar, I need the gate cam looped.”
“Give me twenty seconds.”
“Okay, but no more than that. And as soon as I’m over the gate and out of sight, reset it to normal. There should be a car coming out right after me.”
“Copy.”
I move quickly through the woods, stopping only long enough to pick up the piece of grille I took from the garage.
When I near the gate, I hear a car engine start in the distance. “How are we looking?”
“It’s looped.”
I sprint from the trees and scale the gate in record time. After I hit the ground on the other side, I run as fast as I can toward where my car is hidden. “I’m clear.”
“Already switched over.”
“Thanks. Let me know when the car leaves.”
“Copy.”
I stay on the road as it’s faster than running through the field, but even then, reaching my car in time will be close. The vehicle Fara is in should be nearing the gate at any second, and I’m still a good fifty yards from the Versa.
I hear the gate open just as I turn into the woods. I run up to my car, pull off my backpack, toss it into the passenger seat, and climb in.
“The car is leaving,” Jar announces.
“What kind is it?”
“Lexus.”
That’s what I expected. Probably one of the cars from the garages. “A black GS F?”
“Hold on…a GS F, yes, but gray.”
Gray? Linderhoff was the only one driving a gray GS F.
“Thanks, Jar. I can handle things from here.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah.”
“Call if you need me.”
“Will do.”
I maneuver out of the trees and head down the road toward town. In the distance, I see the taillights of the Lexus. As soon as I’m past the boarding school gate, I press the accelerator to the floor. With one hand on the wheel, I bring up the surveillance app and select the audio bug I put inside Linderhoff’s Lexus.
Immediately I hear the low hum of the engine, and some innocuous instrumental pop playing on a radio. There’s another noise, too, and it takes me a few seconds to identify it as someone sniffling.
Fara.
“Ma’am, would you like a tissue?” Eric’s voice.
Another sniff, then, “Yes, please.”
There’s movement, and a thank-you from Fara, and the sound of her blowing her nose.
Silence again for several moments. Then Eric says, “I’m not sure it’s a good idea for you to go straight home quite yet.”
I hear no response from Fara, but I imagine her exchanging glances with Eric in the rearview mirror.
“Until you’re feeling a little better, I mean,” he says. “You wouldn’t want your parents to see you like this, would you?”
“No, I-I guess not.”
“What time are they expecting you?”
“Um, eleven.”
“Then you have plenty of time. I’ll take you someplace where you can compose yourself and change back into your regular clothes. How does that sound?”
A beat.
