After running my route, I stopped at the club where Chance worked. Chance tended bar a few nights a week and performed on weekends in one-hour revues, two shows a night. The shows featured a number of drag queens lip-synching to their favorite songs. Some were good, some bad but campy fun. Chance was a true female impersonator, a class act.

When he was free, I gave him a quick recap of what had happened and told him I needed a place to crash for a few days. Not long before, I wouldn’t have thought twice about calling on friends in high places—who lived in wealthy enclaves like Medina or Mercer Island—and asking if I could borrow a guesthouse. Or whipping out the AmEx Platinum card and booking a decent hotel room. Those “friends” preferred fair weather, and my now environmentally friendly wallet no longer contained much plastic. I’d seen to that in the divorce, insisted Molly get everything that wasn’t already hers. Her attorney hadn’t objected.

He told me not to worry and headed for the back office where Toji, one of the managers, counted the night’s receipts. A few minutes later Chance strutted back across the dance floor, hips swiveling in time to a hip-hop beat that rippled the soda in my glass.

“It’s all set, doll,” he said, slipping back onto the stool and handing me a key. “Toji said you can stay as long as you need.”

“Thanks.” I put a hand on his shoulder. “But you have to promise me you and Peter will be careful. I don’t know what the hell’s going on, but I may be putting you in danger.”

“Life’s a bitch.” He shrugged. “It’s nothing we’re not used to.”

I quickly looked away.
