CHAPTER NINETEEN
Chloe was doing everything she could to not assume that Danielle was guilty or that she had any information pertaining to what had happened to Martin. Yet when she saw that her car was parked in front of her apartment building, she was relieved. That would at least show that she was not trying to evade any conversations about the topic. If she was guilty of anything, the chances would be good that she’d be moving around rather than sitting idly in her apartment.
Chloe knocked rapidly on Danielle’s door. “Danielle, it’s me. I need to speak to you right away!”
She heard a quick series of footfalls on the other side of the door as Danielle responded. She opened the door and looked almost like a different person. She couldn’t quite figure out why at first but then she saw it as clear as day in Danielle’s eyes.
She looked scared.
Chloe had seen her paranoid and out of sorts. It had been her state most of the time during the last few times they’d been together. But Chloe wasn’t sure that she had ever seen her sister scared. And that, in turn, scared Chloe.
“What’s wrong?” Danielle asked.
“It’s Martin,” Chloe said, realizing for the first time the weight of the news she was about to deliver. “His body was found in the trunk of his car. I’m sorry…”
Danielle nodded and bit at her bottom lip as it quivered. “My God. I just…how did this happen?”
Chloe walked in without being formally invited and turned to Danielle. “I’m only going to ask you this once and I’m going to believe your answer no matter what,” she said. “Danielle, did you have anything to do with what happened to Martin?”
“No,” she said, wiping a tear away from her left eye. “Nothing.”
Chloe had expected Danielle to seem offended at the insinuation. But she was currently too frightened to be offended, or so it seemed.
“I know this is a shock and you need to process, but we don’t have much time.”
“Time?” Danielle asked, clearly not understanding.
“Danielle…there was a stray hair and a partial fingerprint discovered at the scene. They’re both being analyzed right now. And based on what we know at the moment, you were the last person to see him alive. And the hair…it was black and short, like yours. There’s footage of the two of you pulling into a gas station and that’s the last recorded evidence of Martin’s whereabouts.”
“Okay, but what does that mean?” Danielle asked.
“It means that in the eyes of any respectable investigator, it’s going to appear as if you had something to do with it. That if you didn’t kill him, you at least know something about it. So Danielle…please. I need you to be honest with me. Tell me the truth before another agent has to speak with you.”
Chloe watched as her sister’s face went through several different emotions. For a moment, it looked like she was going to break into a sobbing fit. Then she looked almost angry. After another handful of seconds, she simply sat down on the couch and looked blankly at Chloe.
