Chapter 12 - Meerka

I finished my patrol, and headed back to the far side of town where I had found Zuleyka the room. When I arrived, I knocked softly on the door, worried that she might be asleep inside. I had run into Edrak earlier, and he told me that she was resting, and that she had eaten finally. He thanked me for keeping an eye on her, and gave me a firm handshake as if we were somehow partners in her well-being now.

There was no answer, so I waited and tried again after a minute, but still nothing. I pressed my ear to the door, wondering if I might hear her moving around inside, or even snoring. Nothing. With a frown, I tried the doorknob and found it unlocked. I pushed inside, expecting to find Zuleyka on the bed. I was surprised to find the bed empty.

"Zuleyka?" I called, but I already knew she wasn't there.

I sat down on the bed, hoping that she would be back in just a minute. Perhaps she had just gone out to look around or get some fresh air. Maybe she needed something to drink. I tried my best to wait without worrying, but after only a few minutes, I knew I needed to go find her.

I went to stand up, but something held me in place. Some feeling. After a moment, I realized it was the feeling of closeness that I felt in her space. It was the feeling of her scent wrapped around me like a blanket. And I wanted to enjoy it for just a moment more, while I still had the chance.

Taking a moment to enjoy the silence, I laid back on the bed, keenly aware that she had laid her head in this very place the night before and wishing that I'd been able to lay beside her. Now the smell was even stronger, and I felt a growing need for her deep in my body. I desire that was growing in my groin as much as it was in my heart. I hardly knew what to make of these feelings, and a large part of me felt guilty for having these feelings at all when she was going through such a difficult time. It felt wrong somehow.

I made my way back out into the hallway, and imagines that I could follow her sent. On the street I glanced around at the nearby food stalls not wanting to miss her if she had stayed close. And yet, I think I knew exactly where she was, where any captain would be under these conditions. I headed back toward the port where I had just finished my watch, and headed straight for her ship.
