“It’s safe up here, if a little illegal, so crawl, don’t stand.”

I didn’t tell her that I had no intention of standing. We were on the roof of her studio, on a flat area about the size of a king bed, jammed between the pitch roof and the chimney. There was no railing and the edge of the roof dropped abruptly away into the nothingness. I crawled over, and she moved across enough that I could prop my back against the chimney. She handed me my wine.

“Isn’t this great?”

I pressed my back against the chimney and tried not to gulp the wine. “Yeah. I think so. Or it will be once I get used to it.” I’d thought the view from her top floor apartment was fantastic, but up here on the open roof was even better. London stretched away, and I could see over the roofs of the red-brick Victorian houses, over to the modern apartment blocks to the south. A river of vehicles and people moved below us, and the traffic noise seemed quieter. I groped for Ger’s hand and squeezed. “How did you find this?”

“I knew the trapdoor was there when I moved in, and I guessed it was a way onto the roof, but I didn’t have any way of getting up until my brother came around one day with a ladder. He also built the wall bars for me. Even the landlord doesn’t know this is here—the way up just looks like decoration—I hang cloth on it when he does an inspection.”

My heart rate had slowed enough that I could relax. “It’s fabulous. We should have a picnic up here sometime.”

The look she shot me was positively salacious. “There’s lots of things we should do up here.”

“As long as you don’t get many helicopters going past.”
