Chapter Thirteen
After a hard night of labor, and one birth plan thrown completely out the window, Jen gave birth to a happy healthy baby boy, born two weeks early. Her husband developed an eye twitch when he heard what had brought on the early labor.
The police met us outside of her birthing room; this time Detective Fowler had backup from Captain Fowler and Sargent Sarita. He was not pleased that we had taken up sleuthing on our own, gotten shot at, and sent a woman into early labor, but we gave him a solid lead on a possible suspect for Charityâs murder and Tammyâs disappearance.
âIâm sure we were close to finding her,â I said. âWhat did you find out about the phone?â
âWe had some burner phone; it didnât have a plan on it. Tammy had missed some payments, so we thought it might be hers. We werenât thinking to track Charityâs phone.â
âThe key is the farm, and itâs going to be up where we were. Iâm sure of it,â I said.
âSo, you solved the mystery of your missing town?â he asked.
âI think we did,â I said.
âIâll tell my sister. Itâs been bothering her all week.â
âWe didnât find the farm though.â
âIâm going to find it,â Fowler said. âWeâre going to go up there today. We have some help coming in from the locals.â
âDo you think itâs too late for Tammy? She stopped calling.â
âI donât know. The phone probably died after this many days without a charge. I wouldnât count her out just yet.â
Jen had her baby at the hospital where David worked, and we were there so long he slunk off to take a nap wherever residents sleep in a hospital. We saw him walk by later in the morning in his white coat and green scrubs. He looked like heâd had a shower, but he certainly didnât look well-rested.
He nodded to Corey and Missy when he walked by and stopped to say good morning to me.
âGood morning, Doctor David,â Neil interrupted, and David managed a pained smile at him.
It wasnât long before it was just Missy and me at the hospital in day-old clothes, as the Coreys both had work to do. My grandmother was enroute to pick us up.
After the police left and the baby had arrived, we both crashed, the surge of adrenaline wearing off. We sat low in the boxy hospital chairs. If weâd had even a bit of comfort, we would have been fast asleep.
âDo you think that guy has Tammy?â Missy asked.
I hadnât thought about it. My mind had been totally occupied with survival mode.
âHuh, I donât think so. She wasnât in that car.â
âWhy would he shoot at us?â she asked.
âWell, thatâs the weird part; he didnât even shoot at us, did he? It was more of a warning. Like he shot near us.â
âWhat was he trying to warn us about?â
âStay away from Tammy, I guess.â
âBut you donât think he had her?â
âI wonderâ¦â
âWhat?â she asked.
âI wonder if he was looking for her, too and didnât want us to find her first.
