Jonah

“JONAH, I – umm, I was just helping your grandparents with the horses. They needed someone to watch them, while they made a trip into town. I was just passing by, I mean – actually Belle had asked if I could help out. And –” She stopped, snapping her mouth shut. She was rambling. And I could tell that this rambling didn’t consist of much truth. She was definitely lying, but quite frankly, at the moment, I didn’t care. She was here. In front of me.

I had never expected this. Neither Belle or Granddad had mentioned her being here. Why hadn’t they mentioned her? Though, it wasn’t like I had given them much of a chance. I had just decided on coming back to Harden Fields this morning. Nonetheless, she was here. And if I played my cards just right, I could fix things. I could make everything right. It had been a while and maybe she would forget the wounding words that I had inflicted on her heart…and maybe she would forgive me.

Now that she stood in front of me¸ staring back at me, waiting for me to say something, anything, I just had to find the words. Yeah, words…words would be good right about now.

Use your words. Vocalize. Anything. Say something, you idiot.

I just kept staring and searching for words to make everything better. Taking all of her in. She chewed at her bottom lip. Waiting on me to say something…and she was nervous. Nervous was better than angry or hurt or disappointment, and I knew she felt all of those because of me. Nervous was good. I could work with nerves.

“Kase –” I took a huge breath inward. I really didn’t know what to say, so I decided to go all in blind and just start my explanation. “Kase – I can’t believe you’re here. After everything that I said? I mean – why?” Definitely not my best performance. But the words were already out of my mouth. No going back. All I could do now is try to redeem myself.

Her eyes narrowed, giving me a crossed look between confusion and irritation. I decided not to waste any time, and continued to ramble blindly about my disbelief of her being at my house after our last encounter. But as I continued to ramble on, her look of confusion started to take shape into more of an angry glare. Not good. And definitely not part of the plan.

“Stop, Jonah. Just stop.” She finally spoke, breaking my chain of incoherent babble, only it didn’t sound at all like I had anticipated or like I had hoped that it would. Her words were not of patience and forgiveness. Instead, they were laced with resentment and damage.

I had hoped to side-step this by speaking, but nothing that I had attempted to say had come out right. I hadn’t said a word that I had actually wanted to share with her. Instead, I had just pissed her off and hurt her again by rambling on about my disbelief of her being here.
