Chapter 29

“Something’s not adding up,” Alison mumbled to herself as she stared blankly out the windshield.

After talking to Gloria, she’d powered off her cell phone and driven to another parking lot, this one anchored by a large grocery store. She’d parked in the far corner, next to the road. If she spotted the police pulling in, she might be able to slip onto the main thoroughfare before they had a chance to realize she was now driving a different vehicle.

The presence of her gun—and the way her luck was going, the gun almost positively had to be hers—outside Ryan’s home had pretty much solidified her status as a fugitive from the law. She could only think of one good explanation for her gun appearing where it had: Ryan had stolen it from her. That made much more sense than Michael taking it.

She wouldn’t put filching it past Ryan. He had always been the type who only saw things from his own point of view. If someone had something he wanted, he was just the type of person to take it.

And, now that she was thinking about it, she remembered mentioning her gun in front of him. It had been months ago, when a mass shooting had made national headlines. Someone at Fantasy had asked what she thought of stricter gun regulations. She said she didn’t have a problem with it. Then, not knowing where her client stood on the issue and disinclined to spark a debate, she had qualified her answer by adding that, as a gun owner herself, she felt there had to be some balance between public safety and the rights of individuals. Ryan hadn’t contributed to the conversation, but he had been present at the time.

Alison recalled the scratches and scrapes she’d seen on her gun box and tried to work out when Ryan would have had an opportunity to access it. She kept returning to Tuesday of last week, when he had come over to use her Wi-Fi.

No, Alison corrected herself, when Ryan had pretended to come over to use her Wi-Fi. Now she questioned whether his Internet had ever been on the fritz. Most likely, he had made up that whole story.

She felt a pinch in her chest. Right at that moment, Ryan’s death by the very gun he’d stolen almost seemed justified. Then Ryan’s last scream echoed through her head, and guilt washed over her.

She closed her eyes, picturing Ryan answering the door armed. Whoever had paid him a visit must have wrested the gun from his grasp. Perhaps that was when he had screamed. Ryan had to have known his life was over before the gun had even been fired.

But who had he needed protection from? He’d never mentioned receiving any threats from anyone. Besides, what could Ryan possibly have that someone else would want?

Whatever it was, Ryan’s fears had to have materialized before he’d made up that story about having to work at her house.

Alison thought back to last Tuesday. Had Ryan behaved any differently then? She was ashamed to admit she hadn’t really been paying attention.
