Grabbing onto Max and at the same time rolling off to the side, I sent a burst of power around us, creating a barrier that sent me slamming into Jessica. Normally I would apologize, but in this case, with the amount of power that was coming from the fallen Follower of Odian, I wasn’t sure it was safe to say anything. I needed to focus only on the attack, doing whatever I could to ensure that this man didn’t get free.

“Do you think you can help?” I asked the Taker of Spells.

The knife began to whistle and I unsheathed it, holding it out, and it streaked away from me. It moved faster than it had in a while, and the ring glowed a little brighter.

“Are you sure it’s safe to do that?” Max whispered.

“I don’t know if it is or isn’t, but I’m afraid if we don’t use every advantage we have, we might end up on the wrong side of things.”

We had counted on Jessica placing protections, and though she had been able to draw the power, she didn’t have the same experience as these Followers of Odian, and in that case, we were potentially more susceptible to another attack.

I focused on the Taker of Spells, watching as it continued to create a circle, carving through the power the mage used. Each attempt to build more power was cut through by the Taker of Spells and I lunged forward, creating a barrier around us, holding the mage inside, the Taker of Spells within it, and stood in front of him, power pressed out from me.

“All right, buddy. Now you have some explaining.”

“Do you think you can hold me? If your friend doesn’t know how to handle the arcane arts, I have little belief you will be able to do any better.”

“You’ll find that I’m a little bit different than my friend.”

The Taker of Spells whistled toward him, continuing to cut through the protection he was creating.

“Now,” I said.

The knife slammed down, shattering his protection. The mage staggered back and I grabbed him, throwing him to the ground.

He lay there, looking up at me and beyond me to the Taker of Spells.

“You see your situation?” I asked.

“The situation is that you have access to an artifact that you do not know how to control.”

“On the contrary, I know exactly how to control it. I ask it nicely. And then when I really don’t like someone, I ask it really nicely. You will find my friend and I are more than capable of handling you.”

“You might be able to handle me, but can you handle those who are coming?”

“And just how many are coming?”

“You won’t be able to stop us. We have been planning this for a long time.”

“With Odian?”

“You believe Odian has guided us, where he has only had knowledge. His mistake was in not applying that knowledge.”

“So you don’t follow him?”

“Follow? There is nothing to follow. He thinks to keep the arcane arts to himself, preferring to hide that from those who should know and use it.
