Shelby stepped from her car with care. Exhaustion weighed on her, but then she thought of the prescription she had picked up before coming home tonight. Even though she had a date with Sam, something she was looking forward to, she wanted the whole medicine situation finished and ready for the morning. Then she could concentrate on her date.

Not a professional meeting, or a buddy meeting, but she thought it was a date. His eyes hadn’t held much back, or so she hoped. They had held so much emotion when he turned to her into his SUV she knew he wanted her for more than an employee. She concurred.

Normally she never crossed the line to dating her boss. Had never even been tempted by any other man before, but in this instance, she had been attracted from the start. Even if a romance between them didn’t work, they still could fall back into an easy enough relationship. Sam was already a good friend.

If they made better friends than lovers, then they’d be friends, but she had to explore the being in love part. He was the icon she used for the ideal man. If he was attracted to her, then she planned to pursue this. If he wasn’t interested in her, she would find out now, early on.

She appreciated that he didn’t care she was sick, but instead wholly supported her. He was the hottest man alive. All the while being smart, sweet, compassionate, and a pediatrician. A man didn’t come much better than that.

If she had to improve on Sam Welby, she couldn’t think of a single place where that was possible. Sure, he was a brat, and loved to tease her, and he was a bit moody, but she had come to realize he didn’t go uncommunicative because he was mad, but because he was thinking.

She learned not to interrupt during those periods. He used that time to come to terms with losing a patient. Despite their best efforts, sometimes they did lose a child. It was the way of oncology. Each member of their team had to work through the grief in their own way. Sam turned a little moody and snarly. With little effort, she could deal with that part of his personality because she understood the reason behind his irritability. Was his method any better than her eruption into a torrent of tears and recriminations? Probably not.

He did have selective hearing, but what man didn’t? She doubted that was something he could help, but was an integral part of the XY chromosome. The thought of a date with him still made her knees weak and her palms sweat. Her heart pounded as she placed each of her pets into their respective houses. She filled water and food dishes and then raced to her bedroom.

Bad move.

Gasping for air, she had to lie down on her bed to catch her breath. She was running out of time, so she propped her head up on both pillows and stared into her closet.
