Chapter Twenty-Five
Nicky
NONE OF us had found out all that much. Sure, there was some new info, but nothing earth-shattering.
The pictures taken by the surveillance team hadn’t produced a major player or anyone we knew. Okay, except for two guys with open warrants, but nothing that linked them to drugs. Julie was still frustrated as hell that she couldn’t find out anything about Alan Dooley, the guy Bob Paulsen and Josephine had described as shady at their community meeting. He’d probably used a fake name, and since we didn’t have a description of him, there went that line of investigation.
Jesse and Connor had learned little about the building they were sitting on right now. It belonged to a fish-processing company, which explained why there was so much coming and going. Of course, it would also be a perfect place to hide a drug lab. The fish smell would cover the scent of Nemesis, and no one would wonder why so many people went in and out of the building.
Still, we decided to check out the building’s blueprints. Julie hauled herself to her feet and hobbled toward them, holding sheets of paper in one hand. “Connor wrote down what he thought was important.”
She went on to explain the layout of the building, and from the growing frown on Sam’s face, I knew we were fucked. Sam proved me right when he said, “This is going to be a tactical nightmare. We’ll need lots of backup if we decide to take the building.”
“Connor seems to think the most likely hiding spot for the drug lab is in the basement. I’ve pulled some of the electricity records for the building. It shows there’s a sharp increase of electricity usage in the last few weeks,” Julie said.
“We still need more evidence,” Sam growled.
“How about Connor and I sneak inside and check it out?” I asked.
“Not to step on your toes, but people will know you’re cops,” Jake said.
I rolled my eyes. “We’d go in our shifted forms.”
“No.” Sam snapped his answer a second after I’d finished speaking.
“Why not?”
“Because it’s too dangerous—”
“And you say you’ve got no problem with me being a baby shifter!”
A sudden coldness crept through our bond. While I outwardly remained collected, Tiny put his paws over his eyes. I wished I could do the same because having Sam’s anger——real anger—directed at me felt… unpleasant. No, that was a lie. It hurt, and my stomach quivered.
As if I hadn’t interrupted him, Sam went on. “And it would be trespassing. If you’re found out, that could jeopardize the whole trial later on.”
I swallowed. Sam kept his gaze trained on me but after mere seconds I couldn’t look him in the eyes anymore. I stared down at my twisting hands and forced myself not to chew on my lower lip. This really was my problem, not his.
What a stupid idea for me to even suggest something like that. I’d never come up with absurd ideas like this before I joined this team. Well, of course I hadn’t.
