* * * *
Their journey back had taken twice as long. They were too afraid of driving after Mike’s little stunt, so they walked for a few hours, hitched rides when their feet were too tired, and were let out on the outskirts of Harmony.
Micah grabbed Eli’s hand and kissed his knuckles, smiling sweetly at him with exhausted eyes. Eli knew how the man felt. Even his back was killing him by the time they made it to the house.
And the hot sun hadn’t been their friend. It had beaten down on them relentlessly, making their journey all the more agonizing.
Ted stood on his front lawn, water hose in hand. When he spotted them, he gave a neighborly wave and then quickly looked away before Eli could return the gesture.
Eli had brand-new, never-opened surveillance equipment stored in the basement. Maybe it was time to dust the boxes off and set it up. He wanted to keep an eye on Peeping Ted. There was something about the guy that rubbed him the wrong way.
When they entered the house, Eli groaned at the cool air that circulated around him. Someone had turned the central air on, and he’d never been more grateful.
He lay on his back on the kitchen tile and spread his arms and legs, letting the cold soak into his bones.
“I got just the thing for you guys.” Tristan stepped over Eli and rummaged in the freezer. He pulled out a container of ice cream, then snagged two bowls from the cupboard and a few plastic spoons from a drawer.
Micah went straight for the fridge and grabbed two bottled waters, handing one to Eli. After getting to his feet, Eli cracked the lid and drank until there was nothing left but a few drops clinging to the inside.
“How's Austin?” he asked as he tossed the empty bottle into the recycle bin. Eli didn’t consider himself a green activist, but he did what he could to help make the planet a better place. In his opinion, recycling should be a law.
“Resting. Alric and Holton suspect he has bruised ribs from the crash. Holton went into town and got him some ibuprofen. I’m not sure how much it’ll help, but that’s all we have to work with.”
Tristan sat the bowls of ice cream in front of them. “I grabbed vanilla bean just to be on the safe side, but I got an assortment of toppings if you guys want some.”
Eli didn’t care what the flavor was. He scooped a spoonful into his mouth and sighed as the cold treat slid down his throat. He scooped another spoonful into his mouth, thankful Tristan was so thoughtful.
“How’d your meeting go?” Tristan put the ice cream container away before turning to face them. Eli was starting to realize that Tristan liked taking care of them, and he liked knowing what was going on. Eli guessed that the journalist in the guy was hard-wired into him. But he couldn’t resist the urge to tease him about it.
