CHAPTER 8 – BODY MECHANICS

W hen Vanessa got home from the surgery on-call house, she found her husband working under a car in the garage. She sat on a toolbox on the floor beside his legs.

"Charles," she said. She hadn't decided what she was going to say. She didn't know if she should say anything. She didn't want to hide from him anymore. Maybe she could just stop the affair and pretend like it never happened. There was no reason to hurt him. Maybe telling him would just make herself feel better. Maybe that was selfish. She had no idea what her next words were going to be.

The car was nice. A gray Mercedes. It looked expensive. She never got into cars that much. Her own car was a 10 year old Taurus. Charles drove a utility truck. A few years ago, she and Charles had bought a couple cheap Suzuki motorcycles but they hadn't used them in at least two years. A lot of the cars Charles chose to work on were expensive though. It paid pretty well, and it got him onto golf courses to schmooze with wealthy people. He enjoyed that.

For the first time it occurred to her that he probably knew people that could dispose of a body. Even the body of a cheating whore of a wife. Charles wasn't a tough guy. His t-shirt was pushed up a little and she could see his soft little belly paunch. He was soft. He was cute. He probably wouldn't bludgeon her to death with a wrench. But seemingly mild-mannered men had done things to their wives for less. He always seemed like such a nice guy, is what the neighbors always told the news people after something like that happened. He never seemed like the type to do something like this, they'd say.

"Morning, honey," came the reply from under the car.

"We need to talk," she said, still unsure about what to say next, but now it had to be something.

Charles rolled out and sat up on the rolling seat, "What's going on?"

"I did something bad."

"Are you okay?" he asked. He was holding a wrench.

"I don't know."

"Did anybody die?"

"No," she said. "Nobody died."

"Then I wouldn't worry about it," he said.

"Okay," she said. Maybe she didn't need to tell him.

"This car is a Mercedes Benz S-Class LWB," he said. "It starts at about $97,000."

"It's a nice car," she said.

He opened the back door.

"Get in," he said.

"Why?" she asked. Why would he want to murder her in a $97,000 car?

He took her hand and she stood up and moved to the car. She liked him taking control. She sat in the gray leather seat. He pushed a button and she reclined as an ottoman came up under her legs. This car had a La-Z-Boy in the backseat. It was comfy. What was happening here?

He turned on the car stereo and music played. It was Jonas Thrust. His music was overplayed but it deserved it. Wetness was an involuntary reaction.

"I'm going to fuck you in this car," Charlie said.
