“The human condition can suck,” Susan said.

“You talking about Samantha Carruthers’s cheating?”

“That, too. Infidelity is bad enough, but getting killed because of it is even worse.”

“We don’t know that’s what got Mrs. Carruthers killed,” Barbara said.

“No, we don’t. But I’m placing two to one odds on that possibility.”

Barbara said, “Carruthers had a weekly Thursday golf game at the Tanoan Country Club. He thinks his wife was sleeping with her Pilates instructor when he was out on the golf course. His wife scheduled her exercise classes on the same day.”

“Why don’t you call Severino Torres, the Pilates guy, and see if he can meet with us now?”

“Thought we were going to Vista de Alameda?”

Susan took a moment to respond. “Find out where Torres is located. Maybe he’s on the way to the retirement home.”
