Two days pass before I get to leave the house. When I’m not with Sean then Nathan is watching me, always aloof and seemingly interested in something else, but I know that he’s looking at me even when I don’t realize that he’s there.

I’d been joking about him being a babysitter, but it’s not a joke now. He obviously takes his job very seriously and even though I kinda wish that he would leave me alone, it’s nice to know that nothing bad is ever going to happen to me because he or Sean would do whatever it took to protect me.

When Sean asked me this morning if I wanted to go walk around the property, I practically jumped at the offer. I’ve been feeling incredibly stir-crazy and ready to get out and about, so the opportunity to be outside in the fresh air and not confined to the balcony off his bedroom was thrilling.

“Come on.” He links his fingers through mine and we walk outside, leaving Nathan in the house. I can’t help but notice that even though we’re on his property and should be safe, Sean has a gun on his hip. If he notices me looking at it, he doesn’t say anything, but just the sight of it there makes me nervous.

What kind of problems does he think that we’re going to get into? Why would he think that he needed to have his weapon with him when we’re just walking around the gardens?

“How are plans going?” I ask, instead of asking him what I really want to know, which is if he thinks that I’m in danger right now. “I mean with Larry and the other guys. I don’t remember their names.”

“Alexander and Emre. Things are good. We’re ready to move on Larry anytime now, but we’re just waiting for him to set up a meeting with the Russians. Then we’ll be able to take them all out at once and you won’t ever have to worry about them coming for you again.”

I nod and we walk down a brick path that leads away from the house back towards the gardens. I’ve never seen anyone working out here, but he must have a team of gardeners on standby all the time to deadhead anything that needs to be cut back and fertilize when necessary, because this place is stunning.

If I had free reign of the property then I’m confident that I’d be out here all the time relaxing and enjoying the sun on my face.

“This place is gorgeous,” I tell him as we thread down a path towards a gazebo. “But why did you bring me out here? What did you want to talk to me about?”

He sighs and we sit. When I sit next to him, he loops his arm around me and pulls me close. My heart is pounding in my chest just being this near to him. I know that he could hurt me, could ruin me if he wanted to, but it’s obvious that that’s not his intention.
