WHEN WE pulled into a parking space on his street, RC asked, “You heading home or do you want to hang for a while?”

I was shocked he’d asked. “Are you going to yell at me again?”

“Are you going to make an ass of yourself?”

“No.”

“Then you can stay if you want.” He got out and closed his door.

I followed suit and walked around the back of my car. “I’m staying,” I said, jumping at the chance and hoping I wouldn’t do anything regrettable once we got inside. “I want to see your snake collection. You’re going to let me see your snakes, right? Last time you were all secretive. I really want to see them.” I hoped it didn’t come across as begging, because I felt like I would be willing to beg. I was confused around him, but also anxiously hopeful.

RC gave me another weird look as we neared his apartment, but he didn’t comment. Poor guy, he couldn’t figure me out. Heck, I couldn’t figure me out. Then my phone buzzed with a text from Tara.

She said: Are you all right? I know I said I’d give you some space, but I had to say hi.

Hi. I’m good.

Are you hanging with Corey?

No, I um, no. I’m with another friend. I’ll text tomorrow. Okay? I want to talk, but not right now.

All right. As long as you’re okay.

I’m fine.

Text me later to say goodnight.

I will. Laterz.

I put my phone in my pocket as we went inside RC’s apartment, and he asked, “That your girlfriend?”

I nodded. “Yup.” Dude! It’s like he can see into my head.
