Chapter Six

“Die!” Tia roared as she roasted yet another unfortunate goblin.

The agonized screaming of it’s death proved to be the final straw for the rest of them, and almost as one the small band of monsters fled from the enraged Elementalist. Just as suddenly as they had appeared the forest dwelling monsters disappeared once more into the undergrowth.

“That’s right, run you cowards.” Tia shouted after them as she let her staff drop to her side.

Proud of her victory, easy as it was, the fiery young woman took a moment to once more straighten her immaculate red robes. Even miles from the nearest civilization - if that mouldy little frontier village could even be called such - the woman strove to look her best.

‘Not that anyone seems to appreciate it.’ A stray thought whispered.

Scowling once more at the reminder of Erich and his dalliance with that little twig of a hedge-mage, Tia stormed off once more into the undergrowth.

‘What does it matter if he chooses to dally with inferior stock.’ She thought with a scowl, uncomfortably picking her way through the thick shrubbery that surrounded her, ‘If he’s too blind to notice the goddess that has deigned to notice him… Well that’s his fault isn’t it?’

Yes, Erich was the one missing out. Not her. She was fine. Better than fine. She could do so much better than the son of two has-been Heroes anyway.

She was the daughter of the First Mage of the Tower. An Elementalist and beauty without peer. Why, she had tons of suitors vying for her hand back in the Capital.

‘But they don’t want you do they?’ The irritating voice whispered once more, ‘They want the influence that comes with dating the First Mage’s daughter. They want you because your pretty. None of them care about what you think or feel. Only what you are.’

Tia scowled as she continued storming through the forest, her emotions whirling ominously. Noticing a goblin still warily eying her from the side, she went to launch a fireball at it, only to hiss in irritation as her whirling emotions upset her focus, making the spell sputter out harmlessly.

For a second at least.

After a breath to focus herself, the fireball that launched from her staff immolated the goblin, leaving little more than a blackened outline where it had once stood.

It didn’t even have time to scream.

The casual proof of her power soothed her slightly, but Tia found her thoughts still revolving around her time with Erich.

She hadn’t thought much of him at first. Handsome, and talented enough she supposed. But she had spent her entire life surrounded by handsome talented men, so that was nothing new. Where Erich differed was that he wasn’t suave or sophisticated like them. The paladin was as honest and straightforward as an arrow. It had been refreshing. He didn’t look at her and see the daughter of the First Mage.

Just Tia.

From the very first sentence exchanged between them, that had been what caught her attention.

And it had been that initial shred of interest that had her join their adventuring party.
