I counted to ten, waiting for a response. Jet’s saucer eyes shifted to Su, but neither said a word.

“Did I break some Macanese tradition by suggesting we kidnap Shek? Because I don’t really care, to be honest. We know he’s bad news. We know he’s in the middle of all this. Which means he has information. We keep circling the drain and not making much progress. I figured let’s go right for the head of the snake. Or who we think is the head of the snake. What do you think?”

More silence.

“No responses? Seriously?”

“I’m thinking, Jack.” Su resumed her kick routine.

“That’s a frickin’ suicide mission, Mr. Whitfield.” The shy, quiet Jet had gone back into hiding. His voice pitched higher now, the intensity turned up a few notches. “I mean, if we can pull this off—and that’s a big if—we’ll all have to leave this place and start a new life under a new identity. Or be killed. No joke.” He ran a finger across his neck in a slicing motion.

I turned toward Su. “But if we get all the dirt from Shek, solid evidence of his role and everyone else associated with Viper, then there won’t be anyone left to retaliate. Am I wrong? It just seems logical to me.”

Jet looked at the floor, pursed his lips. Su just sat there, stone-faced and kicking her leg.

“Tell me the MSS hasn’t done this type of thing before,” I pressed. “Hell, the CIA has done that and more.”

“Aha! So you are a CIA agent,” Jet said with a flick of his eyebrow.

“Never said that. We have a free press in the US, and they report things that are seedy to the public. They don’t get shut down or sent to slave camps. You know that, Jet. But let’s not get sidetracked. China is China—I can’t worry about every move the CCP leaders make. It’s just the three of us in this room. I want to know your opinions. It’s the only way at this point. And I really want to hear your ideas on how we can pull this off.”

Seconds ticked by.

I was not a patient man, not anymore. But I waited.

Jet walked into the middle of the small room. “For starters, we’re going to need a lot more people. And we’ll need some heavy-duty weapons.” He rubbed his hands together, and I saw a glimmer of excitement in his eyes. I wasn’t sure that was a good thing. I wanted him to be on board, but I didn’t want a maniac on my hands either.

I looked to Su for her feedback. Her gaze was nearly catatonic, her expression still blank. Jet filled the gap. “Oh, we also need a secret location to interrogate Shek. Hey, I just thought of something. What if he doesn’t talk, even if we do threaten him?”

I thought of one angle to take, something I’d picked up at the McGowan rave. “I have an idea, but we need Su’s buy-in before we start talking logistics.”

She blew out a breath and lifted from the chair.
