Chapter 12

Dad stayed in the hospital for three weeks, and when he came home, he was bedridden for another three. Against the doctor’s orders, he was up and around after that, getting stronger every day. The secret was out around the town about who he and I really were, and after an initial coolness, the town warmed back up to us, realizing my dad had helped to rid their town of a danger.

When it was announced that Mrs. Hupp and my dad were getting married, most townsfolk welcomed the news, but a few were unhappy about it. Despite the engagement, they continued to sleep in separate bedrooms, and continued to furtively get together late at night when they thought Hannah and I were asleep. Sometimes when they would, Hannah and I would get together and repeat our favorite act, which she had labeled, ‘rubbing together.’ I guess we figured that if they could sneak around, we could too.

The wedding took place on a Sunday in June, followed by a large get-together afterward at the church. When it was almost over, I couldn’t find Hannah, and went searching. Finally finding her in the church coatroom, I sat beside her on the bench. It looked like she had been crying.

“Hannah, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“Tell me.”

She shrugged but didn’t speak.

“You’re starting to worry me.”

“I’m just sad.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re my brother now.”

“You’re sad about that?”

“Yes. Because we’re brother and sister, we can’t have our private fun anymore.”

I looked at her. “Hannah, we’re the same two people we were this morning. If we want to do that, we can.”

She shook her head. “No, it wouldn’t be right. I couldn’t enjoy myself knowing I was doing that with my brother.”

“I think you’re being silly.”

She gave me an angry look. “I am not.”

“Don’t get mad. I just don’t want to give you up.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then why should we?”

“Because it’s wrong, Jacob.”

I sat back and folded my arms. “You’re just being stubborn.”

“I don’t care what you say. We can’t do that anymore.” She got up and left.
