CHAPTER 18

Danny / That summer

She kissed him back. After a moment, her lips started moving beneath his and she kissed him back.

He pulled away, as suddenly as he had leaned to her.

“I’m sorry,” he said. He looked at the water of Little Beach. He had kissed her. She had kissed him.

She was silent for so long he turned to see what she was doing, but she was simply looking at him.

“I shouldn’t have.” He couldn’t explain. It had felt right, but he didn’t know how she felt. Maybe he was just another guy.

“Why not Danny?” There was only the moonlight on her face, the light from the water. “As long as you were kissing me, not some idea of me, why not?”

He was confused.

“Some idea of you?”

“You know. Some idea you built up in your head. You know some things about me now. Real things.”

He knew what she meant. He saw her smile, a dim movement of her face in the dark, knew what it would look like in the full light. What her eyes would look like.

“It’s like jumping off a cliff, Danny. Once you do, you fly or you crash.” She leaned across the picnic of random diner food to him. He could smell the shampoo in her hair. “Either way, this — ” her finger flipped between the two of them “ — it will never be the same again. So. Fly or crash?” She stayed leaning close.

He soared as he leaned in to meet the softness of her lips.
