At her parents’ home, she asked both of them to sit down in the living room, took a deep breath and told them everything. Her adoptive mother’s face went white.

“She’s buried in St Jude’s?”

“Yes.”

“The bishop..?”

Rachel took another deep but unsteady breath. “Is my biological father. Yes.”

“I need a drink.” Mrs Harris went to the drinks cabinet and lifted out a bottle of whisky. “I don’t believe this.”

“What now?” her adoptive father asked her softly.

“That’s just it, Dad. I simply don’t know what to do now.”

“Leave it.” Her mother took a noisy gulp of whisky. “Can you imagine what would happen if this was public knowledge?”

“Matthew said something similar.”

“How is he?” Mr Harris asked.

“Shocked. Even more shocked now because someone’s vandalised his car.”

Mr Harris’ eyebrows shot up. “Again?”

“Someone’s scratched it all over.”

“Did you call the police?”

“Matthew did,” she replied.

Her mother sat down, cupping her glass in both hands. “From what you say, anyone in the entire area could have done it.”

“I know. So the police are going to dust it for any fingerprints.”

“Good,” her father replied and glanced at his wife’s glass then back at her. “I reckon we could do with a drink, too.”

“Not for me, Dad, thanks. I didn’t mean to dump all this on you.”

He shook his head, leant over and gave her a kiss. “We can’t choose our parents.”
