Part 5 - Romancing the Neighbor's Naughty Nanny

Chloe Labelle was young, slender, and beautiful. Her dark hair was from a shampoo commercial, her full lips always seemed to pout and her big, dark eyes always seemed to be flirting. I fell for her the first time I saw her, which was last month during a dinner party at my neighbor’s house.

The Carters were a little younger than me, maybe mid-thirties, with a newborn baby boy and a five-year-old girl. Cindy was a pretty good friend. She could be a braggart, but I liked her jokes and she knew how to mix a margarita like nobody else. She was a plump, pretty, young professional type and her husband, Tom, was a square-jawed stud. He used to be in the Air Force or Navy, one of the two, and he flew refueling planes during Iraq. After his service was over he became a lawyer like half the people in the neighborhood. If I still went for men he would be the sort of guy I would drool over.

They were having a big group over for a cookout and dinner party and I was in the house helping Cindy prep veggies for the salad. She was asking me if I heard a recent episode of All Things Considered and I was snapping the knife through carrots when I caught sight of something in the living room that nearly made me take off my finger.

It was a gorgeous young woman with perfect porcelain skin and dusky eyes. She was holding a bottle and feeding Cindy’s baby boy, Randall. Her neck was Hepburn long and her summer dress clung to her body with all the promise of a blanket-draped sports car. She looked up at me and smiled across the house.

That was it. My heart quickened. I smiled back. She turned and was gone, carrying the tot upstairs. I actually had to catch my breath for a second I was so smitten by the girl.

“Do you have a nanny?” I asked Cindy.

She rolled her eyes.

“Au Pair,” she said and then, in a saucy French accent, added, “Chloe Labelle. She is a foreign exchange student at the college.”

“She’s beautiful,” I said, trying to hide my lust in chopping vegetables.

“A little too beautiful. When you sign up for the au pair exchange program there isn’t a box you can check saying, ‘I want an ugly one.’ I wish she would go find a boyfriend before I catch her sitting on Tom’s lap.”

There was a history there, but I wasn’t close enough to Cindy to pry.

“Maybe she doesn’t want a boyfriend,” I said.

“A lesbian? Isn’t she too good-looking for that?” I winced. Cindy didn’t know I was out of the closet and after a comment like that it was a poor time to let her know. She shrugged and we finished up the salad and took it out back where everyone was enjoying the citronella evening and cold drinks.

Talking about Chloe is getting ahead of the story though.
