Chapter 20

I give Clementine a bath, sitting on the floor next to the tub, one ear listening for Benny in case he wakes. I add lavender to the warm water, wanting to believe it will have a calming effect on her as much as on me.

“Is Papa gone forever?” she asks, dipping her plastic doll in the bubbles. “Thomas said he was never coming home.”

I run my fingertips in the bubbly bath water. “Thomas doesn’t know everything, sweetie.”

“Do you?” She runs a plastic brush through the doll’s hot-pink nylon hair.

I sigh, leaning against the wall. “I only know a few things for sure, sweetie.”

“Like what?”

“Like the fact that you are my sunshine, my stars and my moon.”

She beams. “The whole sky?”

I get lost in her pine-green eyes, lashes thick like the boughs of a tree. “The whole world, even.”

“I thought I was your whole world,” Benny says, sneaking up on us.

I pull him into my lap. “Hey, little sleepyhead. You feeling okay?”

“Yep.” He scrambles from my lap, pulling off his clothes. “I want to swim, too.”

I help him into the tub and watch as my two peas in a pod splash with their bath toys. “Hey, what happened?” I ask, reaching for his upper arm where a bruise is forming in a ring.

He shrugs, pushing a plastic tugboat through the water.

“No, Benny, why do you have a bruise?”

He’s not listening, singing the Baby Shark song with Tiny.

Not wanting to upset either of them after the week we’ve had, I drop it. I sit on the bathroom floor, letting them wear themselves out. Feeling grateful that my phone is lost, deep in the gorge. Maybe Ledger is down there somewhere, lost and alone, looking for a sign.

Trying to find his way home.

There are a few things I know for sure. My love for Clementine and my love for Benjamin are two of them.

My love for Ledger is another.

Crazy, maybe. Lovesick and insane. In the deep end without a paddle.

But maybe not. Maybe I can love a man who lied to me and cheated on his wife and defied death once and maybe twice. Maybe love is more complicated than I ever thought. And maybe it’s going to be okay.

Meeting Ledger Stone changed my life, my dreams, my everything.

If he’s gone, truly gone, I won’t ever get over that loss. He’s not just any star. Since the day we met, he’s been my guiding light.

I lean my head against the bathroom door as the kids shriek in delight over the game they’ve just invented. A smile spreads across my face as I remember being in this bathroom with Ledger a year ago. It was the end of an awful week.

The twins were being so naughty; they’d started a game that involved purposefully wetting their pants. They thought it was hilarious, but I was tired of running laundry and trying to explain how this wasn’t an acceptable game. My mom offered to take the kids, and I happily handed them off. Ledger was excited — a night with me, all to himself.
