CHAPTER TWENTY

Don’t bother.

CARLIN HAMMOND.

As it turns out, I can’t hold back my tears.

It’s pathetic to cry over a guy who doesn’t care about me, but I can’t help it. Carson might not be the guy I thought he was, but that doesn’t erase sixteen years of feelings. I’ve known him my whole life, and maybe I just started crushing on him four or so years ago, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t love him before. I’ve always loved Carson.

I find Nate by his locker. When he sees me, he pulls me into his arms right away, which is just what I needed—a hug from my big brother.

“Who do I have to kill?” he asks.

Despite my tears, I chuckle. “Nobody. I’m just... having a rough day. Will you give me a ride home?”

He pulls back, looking at me. “You’re going to ditch?”

I chew on the side of my lip. “I can’t be here today.”

“What happened?”

I shake my head. “Nothing. It’s just hormones, you know?”

“Say no more.” He slings an arm around my shoulder, walking me toward the exit.

Thankfully, Nate just accepts what I’m saying. We walk toward the exit together. He keeps his arm around me.

As my luck would have it, we pass by Carson as we walk toward the double doors at the front of the school. Our eyes meet for a split second, making my heart stop. Quickly, I cast my gaze down, hating that tears well up in my eyes.

Great. Now he knows that he hurt me. I liked it better when he thought I was angry. Angry seems far less pathetic than heartbroken.

“What’s going on with Carson and you?” Nate asks as he opens the front door for me.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I look down at my shoes as I answer. He’ll have to know I’m lying, but I am hoping he won’t push the issue.

“Carlin, talk to me.” He grabs onto my arm. “I won’t tell anybody.”

“I know.” I push a piece of hair behind my ear. “I just am not ready to talk about it yet.”

“So there is something going on between you and Carson?”

I shake my head. “No. Maybe. I mean, there was, but there isn’t now.”

He furrows his brows. “That isn’t confusing at all.”

“I promise we can talk about it later.” A tear rolls down my cheek. “Just... not today, please.”

“Okay.” He opens the passenger side door for me. “I’ll give you today.”

I know he means that. Just today. Tomorrow, he’s going to make me talk. That’s just how Nate is. I just hope that me telling him what happened doesn’t cause any animosity between him and Carson, that’s the last thing I want. What I really want is to go back in time and never kiss him, but that’s not possible.

Nate stays quiet the whole way home. I wonder what he’s thinking, but I don’t want to break the silence to ask. I’m not in the mood to talk.

When we get home, Nate makes sure I get inside okay.
