Chapter 17

Cat and Mouse

Tariqa stretched out a long, curvaceous leg, letting the fabric fall away from her skin where the slit opened enticingly. She pressed her bare toes against his thigh and dragged them down toward his knee, sending shocks of pleasure through his body that erased all other thoughts. Then, grinning wickedly, she drew her foot back up along his thigh, slowly… so slowly… pausing just before the stiffening bulge that his hiking pants were doing a terrible job of disguising.

Evan stopped her, putting his hand on her foot and holding it still. “I can’t think when you’re doing that,” he said, his voice cracking.

“What do you need to think about?” she asked, purring deeply, her golden eyes fixed on him like a cat watching a mouse.

He took her foot in his hands, hoping to distract her from her teasing, and began to press his thumbs into the arc, massaging gently. The motion relaxed him, and the startled look on her face encouraged him to continue, even though it was doing absolutely nothing to take his mind off the words she had released into his imagination.

“You said something about knowing I would come to you the moment I was born,” he said, keeping pressure on the ball of her foot with one hand as he trailed a finger up to her ankle with the other. She shivered at his touch, and that sensation nearly made him forget what they were talking about. “What did you mean?” he managed to ask, without his voice giving away his mental state.

Tariqa closed her golden eyes and moaned as he alternated between light touches and deep massage, responding to her sounds like he was learning to play an instrument. His groin ached, but he couldn’t stop himself from touching her now that he’d started. She was so gorgeous; he didn’t have words for it. He could have listened to her purring and moaning all day.

“Now you’re distracting me,” she said, panting slightly. She gazed at him beneath heavy-lidded eyes. “I like you more and more, morsel.”

“You were going to call me Evan, remember?”

“I didn’t agree to that.”

“Are you going to answer my question?” he asked, tugging on the tip of her little toe. “Or should I stop distracting you?”

It was a mild threat, and he’d meant it as one. Tariqa growled, pushing her feet against his leg as if to dare him to stop. Each of her toes had little black claws instead of human toenails, he noticed. It could have been strange, but he found them unexpectedly endearing, like kitten’s claws. Though this kitten could probably tear his guts out.

“We immortals have a sense about these things,” she said, leaning her head back as he took her other foot into his hands. She sprawled her arms over the back of the sofa, opening her chest so that her breasts were lifted on display. Her golden bodice strained to contain them, and Evan strained to contain himself. He forced himself to watch her lips as she spoke, which wasn’t much better.
