Chapter Eleven: William

“Are you sure it’s okay for me to meet your friends? We haven’t even been on a date yet?” Risha’s uncertainty weaved thickly in her voice, and I glanced over at her as we drive down a mildly congested freeway. She must’ve asked that question three or four times since we got in the car, and I regretted telling her where we were going. Smiling as she nibbled her bottom lip, I shook my head before telling her the same thing I had only five minutes earlier.

“We’ve been on at least two dates, and that’s not including our trysts at my house. Trust me- no one will judge us for that. Besides, a lot of people here aren’t really my ‘friends’, but Nash, his girlfriend, and Frank will be there. I didn’t tell them you were coming.” Despite the mild frustration welling in my chest at Risha’s incessant worrying, I’ve never felt better; even when I first got my business out of the country didn’t give me as much life satisfaction as being with her. Reaching for her hand, I squeezed reassuringly before she tangled our fingers together, and my chest tightened as I turned back to the road.

Holiday travelers packed the roads, and in a half an hour or less the highways would be at a standstill. Whether it was shopping or heading out for winter vacation, people somehow always thought ‘the highway will be quicker’.

“Surprising them won’t make them like me.” My smile grew at her grumble, and Risha sighed exaggeratedly with an indignant sucking of her teeth.

“No, but it’ll make Nash and Frank at least annoyed with me, which will make them more likely to sympathize with you. Trust me on this, baby girl. I’ve met thousands of people in my life. I know how to make this work.” Over the past two weeks I learned two things, the second manifesting right in my car as Risha twisted away from me but kept holding my hand.

Number one- sex was apparently a learned thing, and practice made it easier.

Number two- Risha had two main parts, each encompassing a set of traits that created either the image of a woman or the image of an unruly, young, angsty teenager.

“You owe me.” Glancing at Risha out of the corner of my eye, I bit back a chuckle at how small and suggestive her demand was. Instead I shrugged, flicking on my blinker and checking my mirrors before swerving onto an off ramp.

“No, I don’t. I’m letting you get away with this attitude because I know it’s nerve wracking, Risha, but for the love of God- do not ever do any of the other stupid shit teenagers do. You might get into that mode, but you’re not 15 anymore, baby girl. You have to accept that.” I feel like her dad and her lover. The thought came up on me, but it wasn’t the first time it’d appeared. With Risha’s comfort with me came changes in her; just like with Luca she wanted to do and experience things she had never before.
