Chapter Twenty

Piper

I gasp awake in the dark, completely disoriented.

The second I see the glowing coals in the hearth, I remember everything: the snow, the power outage, Hayes with the guitar. But even with the warmth radiating off the embers before me, I’m still cold. So cold. I shiver as I fumble around in the blankets for my phone. When I click it on, I see it’s just after 1:30 a.m. We never got the power banks to charge our phones back up, and now my battery is down to a meager six percent. Not only that, but I still have no service. Shit.

Outside, the wind and snow are still battling one another in loud roars and sharp whistles. Another hard shiver goes through me, and I realize my nose is frozen, my ears, my toes. I need to find my bag and layer on all the clothes I have in there. Inching to the edge of the blankets, I reach out in the dark and sweep my arm around, trying to find the canvas tote on the floor.

“You okay?” Hayes asks gently, his voice husky with sleep.

I look over and see the rough outline of him rolling over to face me from the other side of our blanket nest.

“I’m f-fine.”

He sits up. “You still scared of the storm? You’re shaking like a leaf.”

“No, it’s not that. Just c-cold,” I tell him, trying to keep my teeth from chattering.

“I can fix that.”

Hayes gets up and stacks two more logs on the fire, poking and prodding until the flames come roaring back to life.

“You must have been a boy scout,” I say, scooting closer to the fire.

“How did you know?”

“The only people I know who can build fires like that learned from boy scout camp.”

Hayes laughs. “I am a man of many skills.”

He finishes arranging the logs and looks at me, catching me blatantly staring at him, and suddenly the whole world grinds to a halt. There’s no more battling winds and snow. No more popping wood and snapping flames. There’s only the electricity practically crackling between us.

I don’t think about whatever argument we had earlier. I don’t think about being so mad I wanted to leave. What I do think about is the intense way he stared into my eyes before we kissed in his office half a week ago. The feel of his body pressed against mine. His thick hair in my hands, and how, in that moment, I forgot about everything else but him.

“You’re still shivering,” he says softly.

“I’m still cold,” I whisper back.

“Come here, then. I’ll keep you warm.”

It’s a dangerous invitation laced with dangerous intentions. I can feel it. And I have never wanted anything more than I want to let Hayes Sterling keep me warm.

He opens his arms and I crawl over to him, my heart thumping hard as I nestle against his chest. We’re both lying on our sides, facing each other. His chin rests on the top of my head and his flannel shirt is soft against my cheek, his woodsy scent almost intoxicating when I’m this close to him.
