Fifteen

Kitty’s hands trembled as she scanned the brief note for any kind of clue to who could possibly have sent it. She could only assume the message was aimed at Matt. Someone obviously believed he was a murderer. But who could have sent it? Someone she knew? One of the Davenport party? It could be almost anyone. She would have to show Matt the letter and tell Inspector Greville. How would Matt react? She folded it back up and replaced it inside the envelope.

The note had shaken her. Matt was no murderer, she knew that. She had known he was innocent from the first moment Mrs Craven had told her he had been arrested. Someone believed he was guilty, however. Or did they simply want to believe it because it suited them? Celeste Davenport appeared to believe it. She wondered what those people would think when the news of Salome’s murder became public. Would it clear him in their minds, or would they believe he had killed both women?

Her little wooden cuckoo clock sounded the hour and she gathered up the other letters ready to go and see her grandmother. She locked the anonymous letter inside her jewel box. It wasn’t something she wanted to share with Grams.

She arrived at her grandmother’s suite just as she was closing her ledger. As usual, Mrs Treadwell was immaculately dressed, in a neat navy suit with a pale pink silk blouse. Her pearls were around her throat and her grey hair neatly styled in a bun at the nape of her neck. ‘Kitty, darling, have you and Matt had a nice day?’

‘A very interesting one. We had a lovely lunch at Bobby’s café, but the morning was rather traumatic.’ She perched herself on the end of her grandmother’s sofa and gave her a carefully edited version of the day’s events.

‘Oh, my dear, that’s dreadful. Has the inspector any idea who the miscreant might be?’ her grandmother asked.

‘I don’t know. At least Matt cannot be a suspect this time as he was here at the hotel and then with me right up until they found the girl’s body. This must help his cause.’

‘That at least is some comfort. Matt’s parents are most anxious that this case is solved soon, and he can return home. If it drags on, then it may also damage his business beyond repair. Patience is fretting that he may have to move elsewhere and start all over again.’

Kitty sighed, and hoped Matt’s mother was wrong. ‘Matt has gone to the guest lounge to take tea with his mother. She had left a message at the desk.’

Her grandmother quirked an immaculately arched eyebrow. ‘Patience arrived earlier. I wanted to finish my work, so I arranged for her to take some refreshment downstairs. I am very fond of Patience, but I must confess, she can be a trifle tiresome.’

‘Matt’s father is quite fearsome,’ Kitty observed with a wry smile.

‘Don’t tell me you are scared of General Bryant?’

Colour pinked Kitty’s cheeks. ‘Maybe just a little,’ she confessed.
