Chapter Seventeen
On Saturday, there was still a police presence at the theatre, but it was understood that Ian had taken himself and a colleague up to London. Max took the company over to Carpenterâs Hall in the morning, Ben went off to the estate timber yard, Libby went shopping and Harry said he couldnât take lunch to the dancers as Saturday was his busiest lunchtime in the restaurant.
âYou should have heard them,â Max told Libby later that afternoon when he called in to see her. âI tried to tell them it had been a perk, and they were very lucky to have had it every day, but it was as though theyâd been deprived of basic human rights.â
âWhat did you do?â Libby was amused.
âSeb and Damian went to the little shop and bought every sandwich they had.â
âWell, at least theyâre handmade,â said Libby.
Max smiled and fidgeted with his mug. Libby had supplied tea and was now waiting to supply sympathy, which she felt sure was going to be demanded.
âHave you learnt anything more from the boys?â he asked eventually.
âYour boys? No. Apart from the fact that it was drugs which got Seb into trouble when Stan rescued him.â
âNot entirely unexpected.â Max looked dissatisfied. âAt least Seb hasnât got a motive.â
âNo.â Libby was surprised. âDid you think he might have?â
âHe was the closest to Stan. And I was sure he didnât really like him.â
âDifficult situation given they were living together.â Libby was unwilling to say anything else.
âMmm.â Max took a sip of tea and put his mug down. âHas your policeman said anything to you?â
âNo. Well, he wouldnât. Heâs not allowed to discuss cases with members of the public.â Libby crossed her fingers.
âBut youâve helped him in the past.â
âThat doesnât make any difference.â
âBut you can make suggestions?â
Libby gave him a wary look. âHow do you mean?â
âIf you hear something you can pass it on, canât you?â
âIf I think itâs relevant. Anybody can, and should. If you hear anything, you should tell the police.â Libby squinted at him. âHave you heard something, then?â
âNot really.â Max was fidgeting again.
âYes, you have. That was why you came, wasnât it?â
âYouâre too shrewd for your own good,â said Max with an attempt at a grin.
âNosy, is what most people say. Shrewd is polite. Now, come on, out with it.â
Max sighed. âItâs not much, really. I just happened to overhear the two new boys ââ
âWhich two?â
âJeremy and Bernie.â Max was surprised. âWhy?â
âNot Paul, then?â
âNo-o. Why do you say that?â
âJust go on.â
âWell, it was about him, actually. You know they were all auditionees?â
âYes.â
âTheyâve stuck together to a degree because theyâre all new to the company.â Max stared into the fire.
âAnd?â prompted Libby.
âJeremy and Bernie were talking about him.â
âI gathered that,â said Libby, after another momentâs silence. âWhat about him?â
âApparently, he got thrown out of a panto chorus.â
âThatâs unusual, isnât it? What for?â
âThatâs the trouble, they didnât say. They both obviously knew all about it â whether they were in it as well, I donât know. But it sounded â I donât know â nasty.
