CAMILLE MCRAE WAS IN the mall searching for a new jewelry box for her diamond necklace. She cried for days after the police failed to recover the old one, since it had sentimental value and belonged to her mother, who passed away several years ago. Camille hoped to find another one like it. Even though she knew her odds of locating the exact item were slim, she decided it was worth a shot. She’d heard Leilani’s Creation was famous for inventing and discovering unique items, and she wanted to check it out.

Meanwhile, Tilly entered the store, and Leilani greeted her with a quick embrace. They’d been friends for a few years, since Tilly became a frequent and faithful customer of her work.

"What brings you here, Tilly?" Leilani asked.

"Do you think you can fix this damaged jewelry box? It’s covered in seashells. I was hoping you could also remove the crevices and debris around it."

Leilani combed through it, shaking her head. There were several broken pieces that may have been difficult to replace.

"I’ll see what I can do, but no guarantees, okay? Where did you find it? It looks old."

"Would you believe I found it in a garbage can?"

"Trash can? I don’t believe it. Since when do you dig for trash?" Leilani laughed. "It’s old, but it’s one of a kind. This is a rare collection. Either the person didn’t know how valuable it was, or they wanted to get rid of it."

"Do you think so?"

"I’m sure."

Meanwhile, Camille was looking around, appreciating the lovely objects on the glass shelf. It drew her to a little sapphire hair clip. Camille bent down to have a better look when she bumped into Tilly. Tilly struggled to balance herself, but it was too late. She slipped the jewelry box from her grasp and dropped it.

"I’m sorry, miss," Camille said. "Are you okay?"

"I’m alright," Tilly said.

She scooped up the shattered seashell pieces from the floor. Camille helped her, but her eyes widened as she noticed the jewelry box.

"Where did you get this?" she asked.

"It’s lovely, isn’t it? It is now broken. I’m not sure if Leilani can still put it together."

"I’m sorry, miss, but would you mind telling me where you got this box? It’s important."

Tilly stared at the woman, perplexed.

"I found it in a garbage can. I don’t just take anything from the trash bin, mind you. God knows it’s full of germs, but it’s a long story. This one seemed to call to me, so I had the urge to take it."

"Did you say garbage can?"

"That’s what I said."

Camille unzipped her handbag and pulled a photograph from her wallet. It was a snapshot of her mother’s diamond necklace from an open jewelry box. She showed it to Tilly.

"Don’t tell me this is the same box from the picture?" Tilly asked.

"It appears so. May I?"

"Yes, of course," Tilly said as she handed the box to her.

Leilani stood there, listening in on their conversation. It intrigued her.

Camille opened the box, and on the lid was an inscription: "To Susana, from Sergio.
