“Marriage isn’t easy, you know,” Terry said and crossed her legs. She’d changed out of her robe and now wore a pair of slacks and a heavy woolen sweater. The heat was on in the house, but she kept rubbing her hands together and blowing on them. “Not easy. And it’s difficult to find someone you can trust in this world.”

“True,” I said.

“You think you can trust Joy to be what you need her to be?”

“Of course. And it’s not just about what I need.”

Terry clicked her tongue, shifted on her old worn sofa. “Oh, please. Please, we all know how men can be. You say you want one thing today, and then someone else comes along and—never mind, I’m being rude to a guest now.”

“No, I’m happy to talk with you candidly.” I flashed a confident smile her way. She was almost shriveled, sinking back into the chair like she needed it to support her mind, not just her body. “Joy is a diamond. She’s everything a man could want.”

Terry pursed her lips.

“Here I come,” a voice called from the stairs. “Oh my god, what a trip I had.” Kendra strode into the room, her low heels clacking against the wooden flooring. “And man, is it cold as winter out here. Ha, that’s a good one, isn’t it?”

“Darling,” Terry purred, her demeanor doing a complete one-eighty. She patted the chair beside her. “Come on over and sit down. Tell me all about how things have been with you.”

Kendra fluffed her hair and sauntered over then plopped down on the sofa beside Terry. “I mean, it wasn’t that bad, I’m exaggerating, but still.”

“Where’s Joy?” I asked.

“Upstairs,” Kay replied. “She said she was feeling a bit ill, so she’s lying down. I’m sure she’ll join us later.”

I rose from the armchair and left them to chatter without another word. Joy was my first priority. Why? I took the stairs two at a time then strode down the hall and up to the shut bedroom door. I knocked once then opened it.

She was fast asleep on the bed, her head resting on her arm. The curtains were open, afternoon light spilling in from outside, even as snow filtered down from the heavens and caught on the window ledge. I made my way over to the window and drew the curtains closed then grabbed the comforter folded at the end of the bed and drew it over her.

Joy sighed in her sleep and rolled over, dragging the comforter with her. I leaned in and planted a kiss on her temple, then left the room, shut the door carefully behind me. She’d slept fitfully last night, probably because she was so tense about what would go down today, and this was the result.

It fucked with my head. It angered me, actually, that her mother could make her feel this way.

Mothers were supposed to be comforting and sweet. My mother had been there for me, even when times were tough for her.

I headed back downstairs.
