Chapter 7

“Ok, why don’t we start with lunges?”

It had seemed like the natural thing to start her with. She had said she used to be an athlete and she was interested in getting back into shape. It was the right exercise to start with, to work on both her strength and her flexibility.

She was midway through her twelfth lunge when she squealed and grabbed the back of her right thigh.

“Whoa – what is it?”

“Oh God, it’s my piriformis muscle. I tore it playing soccer in college and it’s been a damn recurring injury for me forever.”

She was grabbing at her upper thigh and running her hand up her leg. I knew the piriformis muscle well enough to know that it was nestled deep behind the gluteus maximus. She was giving me an invitation that I couldn’t refuse, but I still decided to take things slow.

“Lay down on your stomach” I told her. “This can usually be worked out because you have tight adductors. If I can work them out then it will relieve the pressure on your piriformis.”

She was lying in front of me before my pseudo-diagnosis was even out of my mouth. I straddled her legs and started to massage the muscle tissue in her rear right leg.
