“I think you were right to talk to Peter,” Emma said quietly to Cait as they carried the food to the table. “The police act like they don’t care. They’re moving at a snail’s pace. We have to get to the bottom of this and clear Jake’s name as soon as possible. He’s bringing home the tension at his office, and we’ve been fighting far too much lately. I hate it!”

“We all see it. Have you thought about counseling?” Cait asked.

“I asked him to go, and he said no. He said everything would be fine as soon as the embezzler was found and the company settled down.” She sighed. “But I’m not so sure.”

Cait’s heart sank. “Emma?”

Her sister shook her head, signaling with a flick of her gaze that the family was gathering and they didn’t have privacy anymore. “Later.” She clamped a hand on Cait’s wrist, though, and leaned close to whisper. “But any more information you can gather by asking around discreetly would be so helpful. Maybe Sandra Greer or Freddy Hall?” she said, naming two other members of the construction company office staff. “People at the office like you. They remember you as the extroverted student body president and girl voted ‘most friendly’ in high school. They’re more likely to talk to you than me, seeing as I’m Jake’s wife.”

Cait drew and released a slow breath, buying herself a second or two to consider her sister’s request. “Sure. Of course, Emma. I want things resolved for you and for Cameron Glen, too. I’ll see what I can do.”

As the family took their seats around the lunch table, Cait cast a glance toward Matt. She hated to draw him deeper into her family’s problems, and really hated to give him more fodder for a true crime book that would put the Camerons in the spotlight, but his unbiased observations, his training as an MP and his writer’s attention to detail had already proved valuable.

The family joined hands to say a blessing over the food, and Cait confessed to herself that she also wanted an excuse to spend more time with Matt. She could only hope that her personal desire to get closer to the handsome and charming single father would not come at the cost of her family’s peace and privacy.
