8. Kat

Three months ago

Kat pulls herself into the house, panting and shaking. She drops her purse to the ground and stumbles to the bathroom, but before she can make it there, Joslyn leans out of her bedroom.

“Oh my God, Kat. You will not believe what just happened.” Joslyn blocks the hallway.

“Let me through. I don’t feel well.” Kat clutches her stomach. It feels like eels are rioting inside.

“Just a sec. See, Becca texted me, but I didn’t believe her, so I got on Twitter. Everyone is talking about it. I just can’t believe it. Karma is real.” Joslyn looks up at Kat with wide-eyed wonder.

Kat puts her hand to the wall to steady herself, swallowing down the urge to lose her dinner. “What are you talking about?”

Joslyn’s eyes go even wider. “Someone poisoned Ben!”

The glee in Joslyn’s voice jars Kat awake. “What?”

“He was rushed to the emergency room. Isn’t it great?”

“No.” She drops her head, leaning hard against the wall. “No, that’s not great.” It’s as she fears. Not just a quick puke for good old Ben. He’s in the hospital. If anyone finds out what she did, she might as well say good-bye to that college scholarship. Say good-bye to college altogether. Attempted murderers don’t go to college—they go to jail. Kat sags against the wall.

“Hey.” Concern coats her little sister’s voice. “You really are sick. What’s going on?”

Kat slides along the hallway, using the wall for support, and goes to her room. She practically falls into her bed. Joslyn follows close on her heels, peering into Kat’s face. “You gonna puke?”

Her face in the pillow, she can barely answer. “Maybe.” She peers up at Joslyn. “What are people saying about Ben? Is he okay?”

Joslyn sits on the bed. Kat allows her body to curl around her sister’s, and, for once, Joslyn doesn’t push her away as she thumbs through her Twitter feed. Jos smells like deodorant, sweat, and something sugary.

“So the latest is that he’s at St. Joe’s getting his stomach pumped. This is according to Steve Davis, so who really knows if you can trust what he says? But several people have confirmed that his mom came home from work and found him passed out in a pile of his own puke.” Her voice rises with joy at this, but then she shakes her head, looking guilty for a second. “I shouldn’t be so happy, I know. But geez, Kat, if anyone had it coming…” Her voice trails off as she finds something else interesting in her feed.

“Does anyone deserve to be poisoned?” Kat mumbles into her pillow as she pulls her comforter over her body. She wants to bury herself in it.

“Who do you think did it?”

The question floats like a partially deflated balloon.

When Kat doesn’t answer, Joslyn turns toward her and asks it again. “Who would have the balls to poison Ben? Summer Studabaker maybe. She’s hated him since sixth grade. Or Aaron Thompson. Last year, there was a rumor Ben and his friends shoved a broomstick handle up Aaron’s butt in the locker room after wrestling practice.
