Chapter 18

‘That is the very last time I take your advice.’ Jasper grumbled, giving Mollie a stern stare as they perused the aisles of their local DIY store. ‘If I didn’t know any better, I would think you were doing this on purpose.’

‘Jasper, why in the world would I do that?’ Following him past the bags of cement, Mollie frowned at her brother-in-law sadly. ‘You can’t really believe I would set you up for a fall like that?’

‘You’ve got to admit, this is becoming a habit.’ He replied, studying the price labels in front of him closely. ‘I thought the debacle at the opera was as bad as things could get, but your picnic in the park suggestion resulted in a night at A&E…’

As Jasper repeated his unintentionally hilarious story about how his night with Margot had unfolded, Mollie bit her lip to stop herself from laughing. The way his eyebrows raised as he tried to convey just how serious he was tickled Mollie. Mainly because the idea of Jasper screaming like a little girl as he ran around the park in his white chinos was hilarious, but also because she could picture Margot’s face while he was doing it.

‘Seriously, I’ve never been so embarrassed, Mollie.’ Jasper continued, his scowl remaining firmly in place. ‘My face swelled up. My eyes were all puffy. I could hardly breathe. I blame you. You and your stupid picnic idea.’

‘How was I to know that you would be attacked by a wasp?’ Mollie demanded, throwing her arms into the air.

‘Not wasp, Mollie. Wasps. Plural.’ Pointing to a series of red lumps on his arm, Jasper shook his head in disbelief. ‘The whole thing was a disaster. A complete and utter disaster.’

‘It wasn’t that bad.’ Mollie protested. ‘You said yourself that things were going rather well until you opened the honey. And in my defence, Jasper, taking honey to a picnic in the park is just asking for trouble. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. Like having spicy tacos before a long-haul flight. Bees like honey, it’s not rocket science.’

‘For the last time, Mollie, they were wasps, not bees.’ Jasper growled. ‘The fact that I had just opened the jar of honey was an unfortunate coincidence.’

Not being convinced, Mollie narrowed her eyes at Jasper’s sting marks and sighed.

‘On the plus side, you were with a doctor when you got stung. You couldn’t have been in better company.’

‘Is that supposed to be funny?’ He retorted. ‘Wasp stings can be very dangerous.’

‘Oh, come on, Jasper! You got chased by a wasp, stung on the arm and spent the night in the hospital waiting room as a precaution. You will look back on this and laugh one day. It will be something to tell the grandchildren.’

‘Y0u think I want to tell my future grandchildren that the first time their grandma saw my bare backside, it was when I was having a two-inch needle stuck into it?’

A laugh tumbled out of Mollie’s mouth and she made no effort to disguise it.
