Using his best ever rugby sidestep on hearing the word âclearâ, Sandy didnât care that it wasnât Alan Wise telling them all clear. He burst out of the bunkie away from Lofty and ran across the grass at an adrenaline-filled speed. He went through the now open lakeside glass doors, shouting, âPolice! Donât shoot, donât shoot, I am a police officer.â Although he couldnât clearly see, due to the smoke that was now dispersing, he saw two males lying on their fronts on the floor and handcuffed behind their backs. Each had a single firearms officer with them. An officer was with the third male, who was lying flat on his back, and his right leg just above the knee had blood oozing out of it. The person was barely conscious.
Sandy fell to his knees by the man on the floor and he saw that the person was, as he presumed, George Peveril, who had been injured. The firearms officer said, âHe doesnât look at all well. Iâm not sure he is going to make it.â Sandy ripped off the shirt that John Hopkins had given him and tied it swiftly round Georgeâs upper right thigh, using the shirt as a type of tourniquet. He took off his short-sleeved shirt and applied it as hard as he could into the wound, pressing down as firmly as he could. When he did this, George in his semi-conscious state screamed out in intense pain.
âWhere are the paramedics and the ambulance?â shouted Sandy to the firearms officer guarding George. Alan Wise, who was somewhere in the room, said, âOn their way from St Laurent. I gave the call for them to move forward the minute we entered the cottage, so they wonât be too long.â Looking at the state of George, he added, âI hope.â
Sandy started to pray quietly to himself, equally for George to survive and for the ambulance to hurry up. He could feel his own heart beating rapidly in his chest. He said to George, âCome on, George, hold on.â
He could see that George was unconscious now, so whilst still applying the pressure to the wound with one hand, he used his other hand, which he had to work hard to control as it was shaking, no doubt due to how nervous he was feeling, to feel to see if there was a pulse, as he didnât know whether to start CPR and get the firearms officer to apply the wound pressure. There was a definite pulse, so he said, âCome on, George, your aunty Arabella has arrived in Canada and is desperate to see you. She will be with you soon. You just need to fight.â
Sandy could feel something wet under his knee. He knew it wasnât the wound leaking as the blood oozing from that had stopped. Then he realised it might be an exit wound at the back of Georgeâs leg. He was relieved when Lofty, whom he hadnât realised was standing behind him, dropped to his knees and took his own shirt off and applied it hard under the leg, which did the trick.
