I open my eyes and blink a few times. I keep drifting off to sleep like I have no control of it. Alaricâs still here. He smiles and moves to my side. âWhat happened?â I ask. My memory is fuzzy.
âYour ex turned up at the office,â says Alaric. He points to some Steri-Strips on his eyebrow. âHe got mad. He didnât like that we were hooking up.â Seems like Lake. âHe got hands-on with you,â he adds, and I frown. That doesnât sound like Lake at all. âHe pushed you, and you fell into the door. It smashed and some of the glass went into your stomach.â
I place my hand over my stomach again. The padding makes sense now. âYou lost a lot of blood. They thought you werenât gonna make it. Iâm so glad you did.â He squeezes my hand again, and I smile weakly. I need to see Lake. It just doesnât sound like him. Heâs never been violent towards me.
âHas he been to see me?â I ask.
Alaric shakes his head. âNo. He was arrested shortly after the incident. Heâs not been to the hospital at all. Your friend, Tillie, and another guy, erm, Connor? They came by, but I sent them away. Youâre not up for visitors.â
âIâd like to see Tillie.â
He smiles stiffly. âLetâs see our son first,â he says. I frown again at his use of the word âourâ and he notices. âSeeing you hurt like that made me realise whatâs important. And we were getting on, werenât we?â he asks, and I nod. âI think we should make a real go of it.â
âItâs a lot to take in,â I manage to mutter.
âOf course, it is. Iâll let you rest and come back to see you later. I have a meeting with your dad soon anyway.â He kisses me on the forehead and leaves.
Iâm drifting back to sleep when the nurse pops her head in. âYou have a visitor. Mr. Clements asked that no visitors be allowed, but I wanted to check with you.â
âI want visitors,â I say, and she smiles, opening the door wider. Jacob steps in, and I burst into tears. Iâm so happy to see him that when he leans in to kiss me, I throw my arms around him and hold him tight. âItâs so good to see you,â I whisper.
âYouâd better tell me whatâs been going on.â He takes a seat, and I fill him in.
âIt just doesnât sound like something Lake would do,â I finish.
âTrust your gut. Youâre good at judging people, and if you say Lake wouldnât do that on purpose, I believe you.â
âMaybe it could have happened accidentally,â I say, shrugging. âBut Alaric made it sound like he attacked me.â I frown, trying to remember.
âWhereâs Lake now?â asks Jacob.
I shrug. âApparently, he was arrested, but he hasnât been to the hospital.â
âYou want me to go see him? Find out what happened?â
I smile gratefully. âThatâs a good idea. You fancy meeting my baby boy before you play detective?â I ask, and Jacob smiles wide.
