They chose a bistro in the next village for lunch, sitting at a table in a relatively secluded corner. The waiter, a friendly local man, handed them menus and left them alone, as if sensing that they wanted privacy.

“Is it too early to hold your hand across the table?” asked Ben.

“A bit,” said Alfie, although the idea didn’t scare him as much as it probably should.

“What about playing footsie?” asked Ben, raising is eyebrows.

“Maybe when we’ve had a glass of wine,” said Alfie, “so we can blame the alcohol.”

Ben raised a hand to the waiter and asked for a bottle of the house red.

“Sorry,” he said. “Is red okay for you?”

Alfie laughed. “As long as you don’t mind me getting stained lips. Red wine always dyes my lips dark red.”

“I can just kiss it off,” said Ben, with a wink.

“I’m not sure how well that would go down in a village restaurant,” said Alfie.

“Most people are pretty cool around here,” said Ben. “I never had any problems being a mixed-race boy hanging out with the local kids when I came to visit.”

“Not sure they’ll be as cool about two gay guys snogging over their prawn cocktails,” said Alfie.

Ben frowned. “It’s a French bistro. They don’t serve prawn cocktails.”

“You know what I mean,” said Alfie. “Anyway, tell me more about you. Where do you live in London?”

“A place called Kentish Town, not far from Camden Town. I own a two-bedroom flat.”

“Wow,” said Alfie, “So you’re wealthy as well as hot. A two-bed flat in central London must have cost a fortune.”

Ben looked down at the table. “I inherited money when my dad died,” he said. “I thought he’d approve of me buying property. He was a sensible guy. “

“I see,” said Alfie, wishing now that he hadn’t made such a joke of Ben’s home ownership status.

“What about you?” asked Ben. “What brings a good-looking young stud like you to the wilds of Devon? Shouldn’t you be clubbing the nights away in a big city?”

“I actually can’t think of anything worse,” said Alfie. “I did all that in my late teens and early twenties. Now I’m ready to embrace my inner hermit.”

Ben reached across the table and stroked Alfie’s hand. “Maybe don’t become a total hermit just yet,” he said.

Alfie smiled, removing his hand from under Ben’s as the waiter arrived with their wine. He was still a little self-conscious about public displays of affection in a rural bistro. Although, by now, news of their sexual adventure in the woods had probably spread across the district.

“Cheers,” said Ben, raising his wine glass, and Alfie joined in the toast.

“I’ve never done what we did before,” said Alfie after a gulp of wine.

“What, walked through a wood?” asked Ben.

“No, you know what I mean.” Alfie checked where the waiter was, but he was at the entrance welcoming two new patrons. “I’ve never sucked someone off in public before.”

Ben smiled. “What a sheltered life you’ve led. No walking on the astral plane, no public sex.
