Part Five: Best in Show

Julia awoke to sunlight cascading over her face and silk sheets cocooning her body. She’d become so accustomed to spending her nights slumbering on hay that the comfort of a real bed felt almost foreign.

Memories of the night before tugged at her still sleep-starved mind, and she smiled into her pillow. Her circlet lay discarded on the table beside her. His lordship’s crown was lost somewhere in the tangle of sheets below. Perhaps she’d find it for him before she left, or maybe she’d spend her time looking something else instead, something that promised to be a lot more fun for both of them.

Her grin grew as she reached across the bed. All night long they’d explored one another’s bodies. She now knew every inch of his lordship just as well as she knew herself, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t use a refresher course. Just one more go, that’s all she needed, one more tiny taste of the sinful bliss she’d shared with him during their night together and then she could go back to her life just like before. She could play out the next two days of her contract, and then…

Her chest tightened just thinking about the dreaded “then.”

Life was so different with his lordship. She was so different, and it wasn’t just the human cow part that made her that way. No, it was his lordship. Whenever she was around him, she felt at peace. She bit her lip. Last night she would have sworn she’d be a human cow forever if it meant she could stay in this man’s presence for just one more day, but now the morning had come and her better sense was finally speaking up.

You have to get out of here. He’s using you. They’re all using you. If you stay here, they’ll turn you into one of their private monstrosities. You’ll become just the thing Matthew wanted you to be: a soulless whore. The only way you can save yourself is by leaving as soon as you can.

She knew the truth of her own musings, but she still couldn’t deny her need to feel his lordship just one last time. She reached out for him blindly, hoping to snag an arm, a chest, or possibly something even more interesting, but when her arm brushed across the opposite side of the bed, the sheets were cold and empty.

Julia sat up and looked around the room. No one else was present. Outside, voices filtered through the door leading to the hallway.

“Just warning you,” a muffled voice said. “I remember what happened after Belle—”

“I don’t need a history lesson.” His lordship’s voice was easy enough to recognize even through the closed door.

“Then you’ll at least take my advice under consideration?” the other man asked.

His lordship’s words were too low to hear.
