CHAPTER 25: MIDNIGHT

FEBRUARY 2021

It took me five minutes to process what Noah had said.

He’d been in love with my mother. And his own brother had stolen her from him. I knew Emmanuel was sick, but this was beyond another level.

The drugs he’d given me had knocked my ass out. It was easier to just sleep than try to ask questions anyway. But when I woke up a good twenty-four hours later, in more pain than I’d been before, all I wanted was to find Eve, then get the hell out of this place once and for all. Away from Emmanuel, Simon, and Noah.

“You’re not ready.”

Noah grabbed my arm when I reached the bedroom door. He’d been in the bathroom, and it was dark in there, so I’d tried to sneak out. But walking was almost impossible.

“Let me go.” I tried to rip my arm away, but he tightened his grip.

“You’re not strong enough. And if you go out there and Emmanuel realizes you’re still alive, it won’t end well for you.”

“He probably already knows I’m alive anyway, so what’s the point in hiding?” It wasn’t like the son of a bitch would leave nine lifeless bodies in plain sight forever. If anything, he’d probably want to see the dead with his own eyes, especially me. The guy was an ass, but he wasn’t dumb.

“He’s unaware of your escape, Midnight.” He sighed. “The Reckoning Room was burned just thirty minutes after we got you out.”

“Burned?” My stomach rolled.

Noah nodded and let go of my arm. “The thing is nobody knows that you were in there at all. Only Zacharia and Emmanuel.”

“Was that the old man?”

He nodded. “Zacharia was a former Shepherd who was forced off years ago by our parents,” Noah said. “He’d been a close friend once to our father until he inappropriately punished our mother during Service.” He rubbed a hand over his mouth. “He and Emmanuel share the same beliefs when it comes to punishment, which is why he’s been invited back to lead the Young Men Services.”

“Well, that Zacharia dick isn’t gonna make this place any better,” I sneered, setting both legs on the bed.

“I’m aware,” was all he said.

I thought about things a little more, coming up with one conclusion to my issues. “Nobody’s gonna care if I’m alive or dead, other than Emmanuel. So why can’t you just help me and Eve escape?”

Noah put a pillow beneath my bad foot, propping it up. I cringed through the pain but let him do it anyway. “Your sole purpose at Children of His Mercy is to procreate with a lamb. You’re right in the sense that nobody will miss you. But they would miss Eve.”

“Get someone else, then. Get another woman or girl to take her place.”

“Sacrifice her life for someone else’s?”

I winced, realizing how bad that sounded. But I was desperate.

“The female population is precious to us here. As Christ himself was birthed from Mary, we believe that every woman be treated as though she is carrying the next sacred child who will save us all from evil.
