NINETEEN

KYLE IS BOUND TO go with me wherever I go, Sawyer is not. Yet both of them are a respective distance behind me as I run down the Virginia Beach Boardwalk. It’s not quiet, even at seven o’clock. Die-hard beachgoers, refusing to give up the sun, remain reclined under their umbrellas or wading in the rising evening tide. I’m sure Colin is responsible for the added agent huffing behind me and I’m also certain he’s probably beside himself with anger, waiting for me at the hotel. It’s not something I can contemplate right this minute.

All I can hear is the rush of my breath, stunted and labored, as I push myself hard and harder still, until the only thing I can think of is putting one foot in front of the other. That’s a good thing. What I want is for all of the bullshit to stay shelved, but it won’t. It keeps tumbling down in a mess of jumbled thoughts that I can’t let go. At this moment, breathing is the only concept I can gather.

“You going to tell me what drove you out of that hotel like a thoroughbred at the Kentucky Derby?” Kyle sneaks up beside me and I shoot him a glare that should wither his otherwise unaffected good looks, but he just smiles. “No? Well, let me tell you something. I’ve been with you for a week now and we’ve yet to run. Today you bolt like a bat outta hell, and keep up the pace for forty minutes. I’m not carrying you back to the big guy in a body bag, so let’s slow it down, okay?”

I stumble, too tired to listen and place my feet at the same time. “Whoa, okay. We’re done here.” Holding onto my shoulder as we stagger to a stop, he presses the funny ear thing always stuck there and calls for a car.

“Thirty-first and Atlantic Avenue . . . by the looks of it you have a minute before she collapses.” He hands me a water bottle, and says, “Drink.”

I’m too busy gasping for air; water is the least of my worries. Asphyxiation will kill me before dehydration, that or the growing cramp in my side. Whichever comes first.

“So, I’m guessing no accommodation papers are in the works as you so promised this afternoon?” His smirk is contagious and I smile in return, only to bend over to retch in the bushes next to me.

Nothing comes out because I haven’t eaten in God knows how long and I’ve yet to drink the water he so casually shoved in my face.

“Thanks,” I say, this time taking a drink and swirling it around my mouth. Dear lord, I hope the paparazzi aren’t following me now.

“So?”

“So, what?”

“So, you gonna tell me what’s going on with you?”

“Now you sound like Colin. Everyone trying to get into Charlie Carter’s brain today, is that it?”

“It’s an interesting brain.”

“You may think so. It’s not been so fun for me lately.” I kick a rock, but wish I could smash it in my hand like the Hulk.
