Eric and Steve pulled up, with their lights off, to the apartment building in Wrigleyville that was located only a couple of blocks from the stadium. They had an active warrant and were on the lookout for their bail jumper Ted. Unfortunately he was a return customer. This time he had been caught doing illegal gun purchases out of state and those guns had been used in recent Chicago crimes.

Ted stood a stocky five-eight with brown hair, bushy eyebrows, light complexion, clean-shaven and known for being nasty to anyone he came in contact with. If it weren’t for Ted’s big mouth they would have never known he was in Wrigleyville. Steve received a call that Ted caused a raucous at a convenience store with another customer and followed the customer to this apartment building. A picture sent via cell phone confirmed it to be good, ole Ted. The whole scenario sounded like him. He never knew when to keep his mouth shut.

As soon as they exited their van they saw a bright light flash above them, a loud crash and something on fire came barreling down from one of the top floors. It hit the ground with a thud. People screamed from inside the building. Eric ran to get a blanket stored in the back of the van and joined Steve at the object on fire.

“Too late.” Steve shook his head. “It’s a vamp and already gooey.”

Eric held the blanket tightly in his arms and looked at the burning mess in front of him. No saving this one. He immediately thought of Ryan and it made him feel sick. How could someone do this? It was morally wrong. Now that he was involved with a vampire, things had become a little more personal.

Steve glanced around them at ground level, while Eric looked up higher.

“When I initially saw that light flash it could have come from right across the street.” Eric turned to look at the three-flat home and the darkness on that side of the street. It was a new building of red brick, each story with their own porch. The light had definitely come from somewhere near there, but it was hard to tell where. Commotion could be heard in the building where the vamp had either been thrown or jumped from the window.

Steve turned that way. “I’ll call nine one one and go inside to see if anyone needs help. Doesn’t look like anything else is on fire. The picture of Ted will go with me just in case someone recognizes him.”

“I’ll check out across the street. I’m going to shift to Dieter.”

“You named him?” Steve’s eyebrows lifted.

“He makes me feel like I’m part of the K-9 unit.”

“Whatever.” Steve chuckled. “Don’t scare the good guys.”

“I’m not looking to do that at all. I want to grab whoever did this killing and maybe find Ted in the process. Remember that Dieter is one of my fastest runners.” Eric opened the back of the van and pulled off his clothes.
