CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Kellye began testing the walls of the shack to see what they were made of. They seemed to just be simple wood and plaster. Perhaps if she could find something to tear through it, she could get the bars off the window and get out of here. Searching about, there was nothing. The place had been stripped of everything but the cot and the hot plate.

As panicked set in, she began looking at the cot, trying to see if it could perhaps be pulled apart and the metal bars used to pry open the ones in the window. She concluded that it probably could be broken down, but the cheap metal bars were far too weak for the kind of leverage she was going to need.

A sort of rage began to seep in. She could feel it building until there was nothing short of fury. That’s when it began to happen. Her body felt like it was contorting. It wasn’t painful, but there was a pressure there like she’d never experienced before. Before she could even wrap her head around what was happening, it was over. She stood there, a woman trapped in the body of a bear.

She stood in the center of the cottage, wondering what she was supposed to do now and wondering how she got back to herself. She decided that her first order of business was to throw her increased animal weight against the front door and see if she could dislodge it. She tried pushing and that failed, so she got as much of a running start as she could in the small place and heaved herself against it. Nothing. She turned back to look at the window again.

Behind her, she heard the sound of a vehicle pulling into the old camp. It could be him or perhaps it was his men. Either way, who knew what lay in store for her if she stayed here any longer. She turned her attention back to the window and reared up on her hind legs, wrapping her front paws around the bars and pulling with all her might. Much to her surprise, the concrete around them began to crack and crumble, allowing her to pull them free.

She tossed them aside and broke out the already cracked window behind them, squeezing her massive body through the fractured opening and landing with a thud in the dirt behind the shack. She was dazed for a moment, as much by being free as being a bear who just crammed herself out a window.

She was spurred into movement by the sound of the door being unlocked. That got her moving. Instinct seemed to take over as she ran across the bit of yard between the old shack and the woods. She jumped to her feet and headed for the line of trees, running behind them and lunging into the thicker cover that joined them to one side.

Kellye had some idea where she was, though not an exact idea of how to get back home from there.
