THAT little interlude meant Scott forgot all about his sleeping pills, and by the time they boarded the plane for the Hong Kong to Sydney flight, it was too late to bother with them, so he didn’t sleep a wink the entire time. Luckily, it wasn’t too busy at Sydney airport at the time they arrived, so they were only in customs for a little while. They came out into the arrivals hall to the cheers of their families—all their families except Ash’s—who were waiting for them on the other side. Scott’s parents and Mel were all waiting for him and Ash, because Ash always came home with them. Mel ran to hug him as soon as she could.

“Welcome home,” she said, grinning at him. “Christ, you look like shit.”

Scott smiled tiredly. “Yeah, well. Not sleeping for six months will do that to a person. And it was a tough flight too.”

“I’m sure it was.” Mel had never been overseas. “How was it?”

“I’ll tell you later. Right now I just want to get home.”

“Of course.” Mel took his hand and towed him toward his parents, Ash following behind.

“Scott David King, look how thin you are,” his mother said to him as he bent down to give her a hug. “Don’t they have food in Europe, darling?”
